Yet another Web site posted yet another "tip" today recommending that you clean out your Prefetch folder to improve performance of Windows. Arrrggghhh! Ahhh thank you ! ... it is so refreshing to find accurate information backed up by technical detail for a change.

Perhaps you could also dispel/confirm/explain the EnableSuperfetch in XP Longhorn functionality tip that is starting to appear (eg. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24749)

I ran some tests on two machines, rebooting twice after removing the prefetch files. On one machine with only 256 MB of ram and few startup programs, it made only 4 seconds difference on any of the boots, but it was 4 seconds slower on the second reboot than before deleting the prefetch files.

On another machine with 752 MB of ram, and more startup programs, the second reboot after deleting was about 15 seconds slower (and the first reboot very slow).

Thus, it appears to be that deleting prefetch files is a way to slow down your computer!

You say it deletes files over time and retains only 128 .pf files, how does the OS decide which files need to be deleted? Does it use date stamp for qualifying these files?
