musings and rants from sara williams

www.msdn.com

Wow!  Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and for the great feedback about MSDN RSS feeds. I'll post a consolidated list next week. Several of the suggestions are already in the works, and several are harder than they should be with our current infrastructure, but we'll get there.

Didja know that www.msdn.com maps to msdn.microsoft.com? We acquired the URL and did the mapping a few months ago, but haven't really publicized it much yet. We'll probably make an announcement on the MSDN home page soon. Everytime someone sees me type it, they say "wow - i didn't know you could do that!". So now you know.

The MSDN team has been working really hard lately, so yesterday we took a much-needed break and spent the day doing a mystery & scavenger hunt in Seattle. We had a great time, and it was fun to see everyone at play. Tommy was our unofficial photographer, so maybe he'll post some pix. And of course, Erica Wiechers had her video camera, so we might end up with an MSDN TV Outtakes show. :-)

I just want to thank the whole MSDN team for the hard work you guys (and gals) do. I like the new site look, and my typing fingers appreciate the www.msdn.com tip. Also let me thank Andy Boyd from the MSDN downloads site for putting up with all of us very impatient people during the Server 2003/VS.NET 2003 launches. We all appreciated the extra trouble he went through to get the downloads up there for us. Just thanks to everyone involved for the work, and gool luck on all future projects. Dan

I would love to see the outtakes, that would be great. I have a question for you. Why is MSDN all of a sudden pushing RSS? Are you guys (and gals) up to something we don't know about or are you just using the tools because it is useful?

"...several are harder than they should be with our current infrastructure." Sara: I'm curious: What is your "current infrastructure?" Are you using Microsoft Content Management Server, or some other system to manage MSDN? I've been developing an in-house content management system (in ASP.NET, of course!) for Fawcette.com over the past year, so I'm interested in comparing notes. Thanks!

Sarah, Williams' - surely that's a possessive plural. Isn't Williams's better - because we can then distinguish between those things you own and those things everyone called Williams owns? I write as a Jones. By the way - Williams/Jones - good Welsh stock there. Do you know your Welsh roots?

Thanks for the heads up on the domain. Now I can type MSDN (Ctrl-Enter) in the IE address bar and go right to MSDN! Way cool!

David - Either form is accepted. See University of Chicago's Manual of Style (14th edition) section 6.30. Being a minimalist, I prefer the form without the extra(neous) "s". My "Williams" is English, but very muddied. Cheers- -Sara

Jeff: I'm not Sara, but since I've been associated with various projects in the past few years here at MSFT where we considered/used RSS, I can maybe comment. My opinion is that RSS is simply a useful tool, and has become predictably more useful as the ecosystem of tools such as aggregators, crawlers, etc. grows. When I have seen RSS considered and rejected, it is often because the people running the project did not think RSS had exactly the right features to meet their requirements. As more people inside the company have grown familiar with RSS, the level of comfort has gone up, and it has become a more natural first choice.

Rajiv - good idea. i'll check and see what I can do about that. not that it's the right design, but the reason for the behavior you see is that msdn.com just redirects to msdn.microsoft.com. So, since msdn.microsoft.com/india 404s, msdn.com does as well. the india msdn site is http://www.microsoft.com/india/msdn/, but i agree that it'd be nice if msdn.com/india (and msdn.microsoft.com/india) redirected to www.microsoft.com/india/msdn, so I'll see if I can make it happen (for the other sub sites as well.). thanks!
