musings and rants from sara williams

A fun week and WMV

Shipping on Monday was followed up by more fun throughout the week.  Our launch went pretty smoothly - our team is getting better and the launch gods were smiling on us.  We did have some problems w/ downloads, but progress on those is underway.

My interviews on channel 9 went live.  It's so weird to hear yourself recorded.  I sound much better inside my own head!

Jon Udell's post today brings up a great point - MSDN doesn't make our .wmv  files (for msdntv, the .net show and others) available for download directly.  We bundle them up in .exes.  I can theorize about why we do it, but the decision predates my arrival in MSDN.  So we're investigating to see if we can make it happen.  Doesn't seem unreasonable to me...  Thanks Jon!

I think giving a link to an audio-only stream would be a better step forward. For one, videos are passive, essentially a waste of time (you can reply that audio doesn't change much this either, but at least audio is more seamless from a network bandwidth perspective). Second, why would you want to see the seemingly moving pixelized face of someone while his face pic does essentially the same? Third, an audio stream wastes much less bandwidth and opens a room for the exciting topics of 1) automatic text summary generation, 2) audio-hyperlinking (a technique to begin playing a stream at a given position), 3) language translation (in case you didn't know, half your audience is not English native).

They're packaged up in .exe so an EULA can be included with the video. At least, that's how it was explained to me.

I haven't checked out "Ladybug" yet, but your video interviews got me interested in it. For what it's worth, you came across sounding good to me: professional, competent, confident (but not arrogant).
