Grain Elevators & Communities

Just got back from Convergence, it was by far the best I have been to. Doug’s keynote was quite emotional. The story he used to illustrate “communities” had to do with his family Grain Elevator (seriously I had to look up what the heck this is on Wikipedia J) business in Arthur, N.D (I hope that is the place !!) and their 100 year history and how “trust” was a large part of what made this business and the overall “community” function well. It was an inspiring story. I got a chance to demo Dynamics communities – user driven content, continuous publishing/shared source and role driven social networking were the themes I highlighted. As I was going over the newsgroups (a great example of how user generated content in newsgroups is as powerful a source as any knowledge base or help), I noticed that Dynamics SL team was doing a fantastic job of responding to all the suggestions. This team has a great process for “triaging” all suggestions and posting responses and tracking in Product Studio the requests they take in. Dynamics SL team – you folks rock!!

Growing up in a farming community myself, I could totally understand the depth of emotion that Doug encountered when talking about his family and the community he grew up in.

It was extremely interesting to watch how Doug fought through emotion to explain a simple yet critical point about the importance of Trust, and taking care ofthe customer,  through a personal family excperience.  Then, slowly, but surely, regain his control, confidence and passion to drive home the commercial message of the three C's (Caring, Committment and Courage) extending to a fourth - Community.

In this convergence (my first) Microsoft have really hit the spot in their theme / message that technology is more closely linked to the humanities then we think.  Neither one can grow without the other, To create great software and businesses it is essential to have Caring, Committment, Courage and a united community.  The solution to many of societies ills will come through the development of software and the sharing and community building software helps create.

Simple software solutions such as e-mail, chat sites and blogs have enable millions of people, all over the world, to reach out and connect for personal and commercial reasons, building communities on a scale never before possible.

Microsoft seem deeply committed to both the advancement of technology and the advancement of society/community through technology and they will continue to grow strongly as a result.

Doug, it was an extremely powerful message and well presented.

Having just returned from my first Convergence, I am still decompressing ;-) but as a potential ISV/Partner who is evaluating the MBS market, I was super-impressed by what I saw and heard!  Doug and Jeff's passion for customers AND partners was impressive in their keynotes, as was the enthusiasm and competence of every MBSer microsoftie that I met...

Satya, your demo presentations were great - I was especially amazed at how you (and your team backstage) pulled it off on Friday!

I agree.  I am hoping they will put Doug's keynote (along with Mass Ensemble's performance) out with Bill's and Jeff's.  It was a great message.

I have personal experience with the SL team responding to the newgroup - we posted an issue we were having out there  and heard from David Dennis within 24 hrs - that's listening to the users!
