Dynamics - Tech Conference Suggestions

Tech Conference. We have been having internal discussion threads around how we reach out to our technical community more effectively. In the past GP had Tech Conferences. Navision had their Product Conference. We have in the last couple years switched to tracks as part of Tech Ed. I am wondering if partners feel like Tech Ed is working. I like the fact that a partner can come to Tech Ed and get latest information on a host of technologies that cut across our servers and Office/SharePoint. However, I also know that in the past there was more in-depth tech conference content that we don’t do justice to at Tech Ed. Would love to here from customers and partners on what they would like to see us to do here.

As a customer that is very active with NAV from doing minor mods to thinking of taking the developers training, I would love to see a conference that focuses on the tech side of NAV that customers are allowed to attend.  Convergence is great a scrating the surface, but now it's time to dive in deep.

Any techincal info on upgrade and preparation for upgrade to new versions of Navision.
Also what things we should learn to prepare for future releases of Dynamics.
Also technical info on development changes from 2 tiered to 3 tiered system for NAV.

We have found that the MBS platforms have gotten very little attnention in the Tech Ed conferences, especially the Solomon platform.   We have not attended any of these in the past few years.  We review the content befor we attend now.  If there is not very leading edge folks talking about advanced configurations and success stories.  Our professionals did not find much of that content in the recient tech ed events.

With that said I don't think that it would take much to change that in the event.  Bottom line content is king, not the venue or event itself.

I like the idea of some technical conference, talk about new versions, changes, suggestions - right now I have feeling that big changes are made "somewhere" by "someone" but without communications with the partners and end-users. And it is not good. On each meeting there is only the roadmap of Dynamics, but nothing more. It is time to say more, becouse all need to be prepared and it needs time. There were some meetings for ISV but why just only ISV? Everyone need to be prepared.

Thanks :-)

I want to see more trainings on SQL Server Analysis & Reporting Services with Dynamics. The KPI's and role-based pages in Dynamics lacked the flexibility of metrics that users need to make them more effective in their daily activities.

I would love to see a stepped program much like a College or University. You can then tell which sessions to take, to build on the base knowledge you have obtained.

CRM can be approached from so many different angles, having corporate learning organizational support is much appreciated!

There are so many things going on at Tech Ed by MBS is simply lost in the shuffle. I agree with other posters that what little that is presented at Tech Ed and even at Convergence is often just scratching the surface. In fact, much of it is just review for those who are really involved in one of more of the technologies.

I attended the three day Project Conference 2006 and the two day Visio Conference 2006. While they ate up a considerable amount of time, I feel that the benefits far outweighed the costs. I was blown away by the breadth of session offerings, the knowledge of attendees and presenters and the enthusiasm of all to join in and make everyone’s experience with the applications and with Microsoft better.

It surprises me that other groups within Microsoft have not adopted this approach. I think they would grow a community of evangelists if and when they did.

Details. I would very much like to learn about details. I have seen the waves roadmap many times, and it is not detailed enough. It is of course good to learn what is in store for 2012, but I want to know what I need to do to prepare for the release THIS YEAR. There is so much new technology to understand, but nobody is willing to commit to some details. I need to know if I need to learn Reporting services, or if I need to know the details of RDL, or if I need to get some C# knowledge, or if the new architecture requires me to have a good working knowledge of IIS administration. Details like that is what I am waiting for. Unless all the information is unlocked, I don't think TechEd is the right place for this, there's just too little Dynamics information for that.

Thanks for listening :)

There is too much Microsoft material to cover all tech content in a single conference. It is better to have conferences be product line specific with add ons for associated products.
Maybe then your SQL Server team could learn what is important to each segment and the work arounds that the business application groups have to put together to overcome SQL Server limitations.
(Where is the Navision SIFT support in SQL Server 2005?)

While I would love to attend a tech conference for Dynamics, I would rather see the information given at Convergence.

As a developer/project manager at a customer,  I want to improve my skills and guide the company in the right direction. Without the knowledge of where MBS is heading, that is difficult. However, getting approval for multiple conferences during the year is also difficult. I was at Convergence and enjoyed it very much. The breadth of information available was overwhelming at times- especially for someone trying to learn across multiple tracks (NAV, SQL, Office). I can't wait to get the DVD set! So, while a technical conference could be helpful, I don't know if I could get authorization to attend. My guess would be that the response would be to choose either Convergence or the tech conference and I need both to do my job effectively. Thus, I would rather see more tech information at Convergence, than another conference.

Hi Satya,

I am currently trying to put together a presentation for Tech Ed Europe for Dynamics NAV, but that is not easy. I am now entering my 16th year with Navision, so its pretty easy to go very high tech, butis that what people want? Maybe it needs ot be a programmers over view, or maybe even an interface session, i.e. showing non C/SIDE developers what they need to know to connec the lego blocks into Navision (Lego being one of the early Navision users ;)

I really don't see that Navision development can be taught at Tech Ed, but Tech Ed can be a great portal into the Navision world.

Also we are organizing a user based Navision meeting, where we will cover Upgrades, parnter management nad freelancing, but again these topics just don't fit into the current Microsoft stream, so need to be handled seperately.
