Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

[2007-07-07] Installed new Sigmatel Driver; much better. Not perfect.

I went to http://support.dell.com/ and entered my system service tag, then selected vista as my operating system and saw the new Sigmatel driver:

image

My install experience

- 3 Reboots!

- One confusing error message asking me to reboot

Delayed starting

- Was around 5 seconds without disabling enhancements. Now with the new driver + enabling enhancements it is much faster; maybe 0.25 seconds. Should be 0 seconds

Skips

- Haven't noticed skipping

My Conclusion

- Delayed starting is still irritating. Am going to keep the new driver but also disable enhancements.

[2007-05-12] Update Regarding the issue of this workaround resulting in a loss of functionality

Disabling enhancements will, of course, reduce audio features available for your system so I wanted to emphasize that this is just a temporary workaround for the problem until we get the real fix: an updated driver.

FYI: I don't have the updated driver and I do not know when it will be available. As soon as I find out, I will post.

[2007-05-11] Update on the cause of the problem

Some audio experts on campus have identified this ultimately as a driver problem. So, now I am trying to find a version of the driver that works and install it. My hope is that Dell will release updated drivers via Windows Update so that people will not be forced to manually find, download, and install the driver.

[2007-05-05] Update on SRS WOW Effects

One of the comments below indicates that instead of disabling enhancements that disabling just SRS WOW effects in Windows Media Player was all that was needed to stop the problem. I have tried disabling the SRS WOW Effects in WMP11 and it made no difference on my machne. The only way that the problem goes away for me is when I "Disable All Enhancements".

[Original Post from 2007-03-15]

The arrival of a a new PC several weeks ago had one minor disappointment. Whenever Windows Media Player 11 started playing a song it would delay for 3-5 seconds before the sound would be heard. More irritatingly, about halfway through most songs it would stutter for a moment. A quick search revealed that might be a sound driver issue solved by disabling "enhancements" in the Sound Control Panel. I tried it and it worked for my machine (Dell XPS 410 with the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC).

Steps below

Launch Sounds in Control Panel (shown in Classic View)

Then in the Sound Control Panel right-click on Speakers and select Properties

Navigate to the Enhancements tab and check Disable all enhancements.

IMPORTANT: You MUST have Disable All Enhancements checked even if none of the enhancements are specifically enabled. In other words: it must match the screenshot below exactly.

Then click OK and close the Control Panel.

You are a genius - worked great, after I had tried lots of other stuff... but the funny thing is that I didnt have any enhancements checked (active) - but checking "disable enhancements" made it work perfectly

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

Hey, I found out the actual culprit of stuttering audio it's not these enhancements... you can enable them but only with one condition...

DISABLE THE SRS WOW  in mediaplayer 11 :)

turn that off and everything will be fine!!

it doesn't work with this enhancmeent ...

ONCE AGAIN :  turn off SRS wow in media player 11

I have windows xp home edition and win media player 11 installed itself recently. at first i thought it looked awsome then i tried to listen to music on it and the music was skipping and studdering. There is no "enhancement" check box anywhere when i click "sound" in the control panel. how can i stop it with win. xp ?? i have a relatively high performance gaming machine so i know i have the resources. Win. media player 11 sounds like crap with the skips. Please, what can i do????

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

This is an update to my above question. I rolled back from win. media player 11 to win player 10 and my music was still skipping. win. media player 10 had not had that problem before the upgrade to 11. I tried everything and at first, nothing worked. I have a computer i built for gaming and with my gigabyte motherboard came a program called "easy tune 5". It allows you an easy way to overclock your computer. I have never had a problem with it or anything gigabyte makes but turning off easy tune 5 and rolling back to win media player 10 seems to have stoped my skipping problem.

As A note: My processor was never even close to being maxed out when my music skipped.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

To my question on Saturday, May 05, 2007 2:08 AM. I had found the solution to the problem for us asus laptop owners. I went to their website and downloaded the latest audio drivers. Still it hasn't the enhancement tab. But it solves the problem. You can have the equalizer and cross fade switched on on windows media player and all works excellent. Hope this solves the problem for the other's asus notebook owners.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

YES! Thanx.. although i am completely baffled as to how the enhancement option has any effect when all of the boxes are unchecked anyway! I too thought that it was a permanent problem and my new pc wasnt going to be as good for my music collection as i had hoped. Cheers for the info!

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

While the fix stopped the skipping in media player, I noticed that I can no longer get sound from my rear speakers on my 4.1 speaker set-up.  I have configured the speakers as "Quadraphonic" and have tested that they all are working using the test in the speaker set up.  But even with that setup i can't get any sounds to play through my rear speakers through windows media player/center, winamp and the windows environment.  What's going on here?  When I uncheck the "Disable all enhancements" box, I get audio through all the speakers, but skips in media center.  When I check the box, I get audio through two speakers and no skips...

I currently am running Windows Vista ultimate on a 32-bit PC and have the exact same problem. However, like a few other users, my speakers do not have an "enhancements" tab.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

I had both problems: 1) Stuttering of the sound when playing everything containing sound and 2) the delay when choosing songs etc. in Media Player.

Disabling all Sound Enhancements made problem 2) dissapear.

It did not however get rid of problem 1). So I plowed the internet a lot and it seams like I might have found a cure. I seems that the stutter/cuts is due to some error in some Wireless network drivers. I installed the lastest Dell Wireless WLAN 1500 drivers and the problem is gone. So everyone having this problem should try to upgrade the wireless drivers to the latest version.

Hope this can held others with this VERY annoying problem!

Regards,

Michael

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

Re delayed starts, skips and stuttering in Windows Media Player / Vista. Thanks,  but this is not a satisfactory solution for me.  Why are Dell selling these machines when they are obviously aware that they do not function correctly?  When you pay extra for enhanced facilities you do not expect to be told to disable the same enhancements that you have paid extra for!  After spending two hours on the phone to Dell they have not returned my call or emails.  I have had no explanation from them as to the reason why my machine is malfunctioning.  Maybe soemone can advise me as to who is now responsible for the provision of the correct software to enable Media player to perform properly on my Dell Dimension E521?  Is anyone actually working on this problem? If so, who?  Many thanks for any help anyone can provide.

# Solving the stutter issue in Windows Media Player 11

Great and very useful info!  I have a Dell and was having similar issues with the choppy endings about half a minute before the end of audio tracks in Windows Media Player 11.  I had wondered if the issues were related to Media Player automatically retrieving media info from the internet.  Checking "Disable all enhancements" worked as a temporary fix.  I've now installed the new Sigmatel driver.  Like you, my experience with the install process wasn't smooth (several reboots needed), but the end result seems to have been successful, and problem is now resolved, no more choppiness or stuttering at the end of tracks.  Thanks very much!

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

SOLUTION WITHOUT DISABLING ENHANCEMENTS:

on the dell website it gives you a link to download an updated sigmatel audio driver, however this driver ineffective, also disabling the enhancements stops surround from working, here is the driver that fixes everything, i was so relieved.

Thank you for your page I fixed my Media Player errors 100% by changing the sound properties. Vista Dell Inspiron 1501.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

So Dell just replaced my old Inspiron 8500 operating on XP with an Inspiron 9400 operating on Vista. My WMP was doing the exact same thing, taking forever to start a song while displaying "changing media" in the bottom left. The songs would also start skipping as if my RAM was being over worked. THANK YOU whoever posted the quick fix by disabling all the enhancements. Kudos on adding the pictures. It now works perfectly! You saved me yet another hour on hold with Dell's great support team.

thanks - just bought a dell last week and couldn't figure out what the problem was. Not impressed that they have a driver to fix the problem but are still selling computers without so much as informing you that it's available (that they'd sell it with the problem already fixed is of course too much to ask!)

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

OMG!  My dimension 9200 was SERIOUSLY getting me down.  I have nearly 8000 mp3's on a media silo in the Attic and my Vista Ultimate 9200 with WMP11 was about to be DESTROYED by me, in a room with a blunt teaspoon.

I'm utterly in love with Vista and have overcome many quirks of the OS one-by-one over the last year or so (have been using the RC's too) but this one utterly stumped me.

So once again, tucked away in a deep dark settings area, the problem is fixed.

A thousand thank-you's.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

FABULOUS!  One of our computers is a late model Sony Vaio laptop that came with WMP11.  We chose to move all our music there and use it as input to our receiver and distribute to speakers all over the house!  We did all kinds of analysis to try to figure out what was causing the stuttering anywhere from 10-30 seconds (depending on the buffer time setting) from the end of the song.  After several hours and no solution, we Googled the problem and came up with this listing!  Even tho' it's not a Dell, and the screens didn't look the same, it worked!

A kazillion thank yous!!!

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

This does not help my problem. I have a Dell, but it is a Desk Top Dell Dimension 4600 with XP. My Sound Control Panel of course looks nothing like the one displayed. I have found mine only skips when I either minimze the WMP 11 or (in effect the same thing)do some other task. This problem however, did only come on with the change to WMP 11 with WMP 10 and even 9 I had zero problems. Any help out there would be extremely appreciated as dell only gives me the option of downloading a driver that is not designed for my SoundMax Digital Audio! The "fix" they repeatedly give me is for SIGMATEL !!

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

Thanks so much for the fix "Disabling Enhancements".  I am curious though about the driver link pasted by Raggo which bypasses the need to disable enhancements - is the language Danish or what?  And how did he/she discover this driver which fixes the issue in a non-English language?

Sunday, October 07, 2007 12:52 AM by Charles

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

Charles, The link provided by Raggo was copied from my post (df 395 - june 20 2007) and the language is not Danish but Dutch.

I found the update by googling to the manufacturer of the audiodriver: Sigmatel.

God Bless you! I was starting to think I was going to have to abandon WMP for Winamp or iTunes or something in hopes that one of those programs wouldn't cause my songs to skip/delay, however I have used a variety of media programs in the past and found that WMP is the most organized and easiest to use. Thanks a bunch!

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

My two computers running XP Pro have the "media changing" delay with internet streams, but not with local files that I remember.  If I stop playback in Media Player 11 then press play, it delays by many seconds while it posts that lame message, whatever it means.  Is it trying to access media rights or something?  This makes no sense, however, because the first time or after a long time stopped, it starts playback quickly!

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Core 2 Duo and 2 Gigs RAM, and an Asus P4 with 1.5G RAM.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

My speakers properties box does not have a "disable enhancements" option, instead it says "disable sound effects", and if you tick that box it kills the sound. The choices under it are different too, so I'm not sure what to do about the 20seconds before the end of the song break up thing; and disabling of the of the SRS WOW effects thing in the media player did not work either. Can anyone help? I have an acer (new) pc, running Vista basic.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

The fixes mentioned above didn't work for me, but after killing most of a Saturday trying various methods, I found a fix that works.

MY SYMPTOMS:

When I tried to rip and play a CD at the same time with Windows Media Player 11, it stuttered and played VERY slowly, although each task worked OK separately.

MY SETUP:

HP desktop with WinXP Media Center Edition 2005, Realtek AC'97 sound card, and Windows Media Player 11.

MY FIX:

Open Media Player -> Tools -> Options -> Devices tab

Highlight "Audio CD" and click "Properties"

Select "enable error correction" for both playback and rip, then click "apply"

(You may need to click "apply" again as you back out, I don't remember.)  Within seconds this fixed the problem.  I believe the original problem may have been related to a faulty Windows update from mid-January.

Since then my mp3 all play in win media player again.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

This only partially improved my issue. I've got Vista 32 bit w/SigmaTel running on a RAID 10 SATA2 array, 4 GB of 800mhz DDR2 and a 3.16Ghx Intel (dual core E8500). I SHOULD NOT be having these issues if it is "throughput" related. My system kicks ass so it must be a driver/WMP version problem. Other posts on the net say to just go with Winamp. I am just about there.

Disabling enhancements helped but didn't eliminate it. Whenever I download anything or surf the net WMP stutters like a nervous child. I'm about ready to back hand it then send it to bed without any dinner.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

WMP 11 doesn't play audio CD's  and I don't have an enhancement box. I've downloaded other audio CD players and they don't work either. The dvd player plays and records. Also if I switch to Linux on my other partition the dvd/cd player works fine, plays/records dvds, cds everything. This is an obvious compatability issue between windows vista and HP dvd/cd players. Vista is the problem, not the player.

# re: Delayed starting, skips, stuttering in Windows Media Player 11

Sorry to say but installing the Dutch Dell updated sigmatel audio driver didn't help me. Music still skips (although not quite as bad as before) unless I disable enhancements but then I lose the 5.1 speaker setting. I'm using a Dell C521, Vista and WMP11. Seems that most of the folks happy with the "disable enhancements" workaround are playing through 2 desktop or laptop speakers and not surround sound. Anybody got a fix for us with more than 2 speakers? Are Dell doing anything about it?
