Hi Scott.

I'm trying to use the new asp.net MVC P3 and the Dynamic Data on VWD but I'm keep getting errors regarding the assemblies System.Web.Abstractions and the System.Web.Routing:

Assembly 'System.Web.DynamicData, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' uses 'System.Web.Abstractions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' which has a higher version than referenced assembly 'System.Web.Abstractions, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'    c:\Program Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5\System.Web.DynamicData.dll

I'm using the VWD with SP1.

Any ideas?

Hi Scott,

I just finished listening to your talk with Carl and Richard, as well watching the Dynamic Data demos on the ASP.net website. This was the first I had heard about it so I'm a bit late to the party ;)

I've been really impressed with how simple/rapid Dynamic Data is in creating a data driven website. The Scott Hanselman vids really did help me understand what you were talking about in the show and get more out of your talk.

It's really "just what I was looking for" (Just in the last week I was reading up on Rails, thinking that I'd love to see a "similar" framework in .Net) but I have a few questions (please pardon the ignorance on some ideas - our company hasn't moved to .Net 3.5 yet):

a) One concern that we had was about whether Dynamic Data could be N-tiered? I was told by someone who has dabbled that it's essentially 2-tier.

b) Can Dynamic Data exist within an existing website framework? That is; authentication, menuing etc.

c) Does LINQ to Entities mean Entity Framework, or Entities as in Business Components - could you also use services and simple objects?

I hope I'm not covering too much ground previously covered. I tried the ASP.Net forums for some of these questions but didn't find out any info.

I am really excited about what you guys are doing (now that I know about it)! :)

Bruno, I have a sample of Dynamic Data and MVC Preview 3 on this page: http://www.codeplex.com/aspnet/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=14473. The main issue is that Dynamic Data uses the version of routing and abstractions that is in the GAC and MVC Preview 3 uses a different version that is in the bin direcotry. In the sample I listed above if you check out the web.config you will see I forced both technologies to use the same routing and abstractions.

Dan,

a) Out of the box we support Linq to SQL and Entity Framework which you could argue are 2 tier. We have a sample up on http://www.codeplex.com/aspnet/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=14475 that demonstrates using Dynamid Data with ObjectDataSource which would allow you to use it n-tiered.

b) Dynamic Data does not force any thing on your web application, you can use it in a traditional ASP.NEY application. We basically extend the functionality of many existing data controls. They can be uses in a scaffold or in standalone pages. Check out the ExistingWebSite sample ar: http://www.codeplex.com/aspnet/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=14473.

c) Our Entity support means Entity Framework. The sample I listed in part a shows using ObjectDaraSource or raw CLR objects which should cover your cases.
