The search continues ...

It’s with mixed emotions that I’m announcing my departure from the Unified Communications Escalation Team to pursue an exciting opportunity in the Enterprise Search Group. Since joining the UC Team, the past two years have unquestionably been the most fulfilling time I’ve had at Microsoft, and I’m sure you’ll understand when I say that this was not an easy decision for me to make.

Helping shape the UC Escalation Team has taught me countless valuable lessons that I will certainly carry forward into my new gig. Debugging an entirely “foreign” product, building new relationships, fostering a team environment that celebrates rocking out (and having a blast while doing it!) ... words can’t even begin to describe just how amazing it’s been being a part of this team! It’s been a true honor working with you all, who I consider to be some of the coolest, most talented people both here at Microsoft and beyond.

I’ll be relocating to Boston, Massachusetts (Go Sox!) as a Senior Escalation Engineer in the FAST Enterprise Search Group, with a focus on growing the future Escalation Engineers in that business. One of my goals is to apply what makes us such a successful team here in the UC Escalation Team, and instill these same virtues of pride, passion, tenacity, and job satisfaction in my future teammates. That, and I hope they have a decent sense of humor! <g>

p.s. Given the current real estate market, I'm likely going to be in Charlotte for a little while longer. But if you happen to know anybody that’s interested in the baddest townhouse in all of Ballantyne, send ‘em my way!

Debugging Rocks.

On the Google Test Team’s blog, their “Debugging Sucks, Testing Rocks” logo recently caught my attention, and prompted me to vocalize an opinion to the contrary. Debugging does NOT suck. On the contrary, debugging rocks. Rocks HARD. Please don’t misconstrue this as a “Google vs. Microsoft” rant, nor is this meant to come across as disrespectful to any testers out there. These are merely my thoughts on something I’m quite passionate about.

I’m sure there’s a feeling of accomplishment a tester gets when they find a bug. Along those lines, there’s nothing more fulfilling for me than fixing one. That’s where I come in. Much like testers, an Escalation Engineer hunts for bugs. Our tools may differ. Our techniques couldn’t be further apart. But the bottom line is that we’re both on the same bug-hunting quest. Once a bug is found, however, THAT’s when the real rocking begins. Stepping through the code, setting breakpoints, checking out the locals, parameters, returns, exceptions, debug spew, registers, assembly. Now can you hear the guitars wailing? Set a conditional breakpoint to validate your findings. It works! I think we just blew an amp! And for the encore? Writing the fix, building it, testing it, shipping it ... here’s my guitar pick, hope you enjoyed the show.
