Discussions about web collaboration and SharedView
SharedView 1.0 has released!

SharedView 1.0 has been out now for a few weeks, and based on blog feedback, it's been very well received. Here's a few quotes:

"Nothing has come close to the ease of Microsoft SharedView."

"Simplifying a collaboration interface so it is dead simple for a non-technical person is a major upgrade."

"Every once in a while I am blown away by something.  Not because it is the latest and greatest, but because it does what it does in such a simple and easy to use way… this is one of those things."

Many of the new SharedView users are discovering it through Microsoft Office Live Workspace, on the Share menu - just choose "Share Screen" from the menu, and SharedView will launch and start sharing your screen automatically.  If you don't have SharedView installed yet, you'll be provided a link to install it. Because Office Live Workspace is a great place to store and share documents, you can also use it as a place to meet up with coworkers to share in real time with SharedView to get feedback on a proposal in Word, put some polish on a presentation in PowerPoint, or get some updated numbers for a spreadsheet in Excel. It will share any application though, or your entire desktop.  The person you're sharing with can even paste in data in remotely from their machine if you give them control of your mouse and keyboard for a bit using SharedView.

All in all, we're proud of the quality and robustness of the release, and we hope you enjoy using SharedView. Keep an eye out for releases in French, Spanish, German, and Japanese in the coming months.

thanks
Cameron

I don't understand this. SharedView should not have been part of Live Messenger? And what about the branding: Why Microsoft SharedView and not Windows Live SharedView? And how should I know it exists if it is not in a popular installer such as the Live Installer? And why don't you at least advertise it on a popular site such as ideas.live.com? And how do you except people to install your apps if branding is so confused? Office Live and Windows Live have 4 in total file-sharing intefaces, Live Messenger, Live Foldershare, Live Skydrive and Office Live Workspace. What a long name each one has! Please fix this mess now!!!

Have you considered people who use screen-readers? Is SharedView compatible with technology for people who are blind?

Hi Ektar,

SharedView is not compatible with screen readers because of the technology used to share the screen. It essentially grabs the bits (or takes a picture) of the screen and sends those.  Because of this, the text information is lost.

Thanks for your feedback on branding, and I understand your confusion - I'll forward it on to our marketing teams for their consideration.

I loved NetMeeting so I'm glad to see SharedView (been using since its first public beta). It's really a fine product. I've introduced it to a few people when their demos using <insert lame 'web meeting' software here> go awry and it hasn't failed me yet.

And thanks for calling it Microsoft SharedView -- it's quite worthy of that name (versus having a Windows Live prefix).

Can SharedView be installed outside US? The Beta version was restricted to US residents only. Is this still the case for release 1.0 also?

You can run it anywhere the local laws allow, yes.  The data centers are in the US though, so your performance mileage may vary :-).

thanks

This app is a real useful app with only a Live ID required unlike all those thousands of screen sharing apps that require, some of which don't offer a good enuf experience in the free version and others have a horrible UI. I hope the team is working on the next version. SharedView 2.0 should add audio-video conferencing and sharing whiteboard and MS will have the best collaboration app ever. Fast and simple, highly useful.

Does anyone have any tips on how to use SharedView (perhaps together with another application like Live Messenger) to share audio with the participants in a session? I would be great to be able to ask questions and explain things whilst sharing the view. Apart from not knowing how to achieve that the rest of the application was very intuitive.

Hi Steve,

You could start the conversation in Messenger with buddy, using IM and voice, then start SharedView.

Or you could also add audio information to the SharedView invite that you send out.  The audio information could be:

- your phone number if it's a 1:1 call (or 3 person if your phone service supports it)

- a reservationless audio conference number (through a paid service, or a free service such as freeconferencecall.com)

- you could also investigate conference calling with Skype

Hope this info helps, and thanks for your comments on SharedView.
