2007 Office system -- server products language offerings

Hi, my name is Gwyneth Marshall, and I’m a Program Manager in the Office International Services team. Our team ensures that the Office products meet the multilingual and multicultural needs of our customers worldwide. Enough readers of this blog have inquired about localized (non-English) versions of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) V3 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 that Lawrence has asked me to write a guest blog entry about the topic, and I am happy to oblige.

Language packs are available to install on WSS only, MOSS, MOSS for Search, Office Forms Server, and Project Server installations. For MOSS, MOSS for Search, Forms Server, and Project Server installations, the Office server products Language Pack (a.k.a. ServerLanguagePack) needs to be installed; this will take care of all sites. The WSS Language Packs (a.k.a. SharePointLanguagePack) are for WSS stand-alone installations.

Microsoft’s 2007 Office server products are localized into languages in two different ways: 1) fully translated SKUs and 2) Language Packs. A language-specific SKU delivers the respective Office server product localized into a given language. A Language Pack may be applied to an installed Office server product to create sites or site collections in other languages. Application of a Language Pack will not change the language of the installed Office server product SKU.

For Beta 2 and Beta 2 Tech Refresh (TR), a subset of SKUs and Language Packs will be made available, as shown in the tables below.

·         To download the Language Packs for Beta 2 or very soon for Beta 2 TR, go to http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/download/en/default.mspx.

·         See Deploy Language Packs in Office SharePoint Server 2007 for more information on how to install the language packs.

NOTE: The English Language Pack will not be available as a single language pack. You may install the English Language Pack when the Multiple Languages Language Pack (which includes all languages) ships.

# re: 2007 Office system -- server products language offerings

Dear Gwyneth Marshall
It seems you are forgetting Persian language in all your timeframes!!! At least 5 countries speaking Persian, and it’s language of RUMI & HAFEZ poems.
Unfortunately I’m using my own language packs of WSS version 2 and 3, and we are localizing Office 2007 for local use, but I have a lot of effort about contacting Microsoft for officially support, but all of my huge tasks during 3 years past was unsuccessful.
I hope finally I’ll find a way taking to you about this.

Dear Farvashan,

You are correct in that Persian (formerlly known at Microsoft as Farsi) is not currently in the list of languages we plan to ship for Office Server 2007. It is always difficult to decide which languages to budget for translation. We continually receive requests for additional languages. We do evaluate these requests and are currently investigating alternate methods of translation and deployment to meet these customers needs. While I cannot promise that your language will be added in the future, I do encourage you to explore our Local Language Program; working with the local Microsoft office to ensure Persian is added in the future.

# re: 2007 Office system -- server products language offerings

Hi
I have two questions about MOSS 2007 language packs:
1. Dose the MOSS language pack include  all the site templates because It seems not (I saw only the wss templates) what do I miss?
2. In cms 2002 authoring of multilingual doesn't requierd from the editor to be familier with all of the languages of the site (regards that he get the content of the page from 3rd person). In MOSS, because the language pack contains also the admin in it so for each langauge we should have its own editor. What is the best practice for authoring, management  and editing multilingual sites with MOSS 2007?

Faisal, the Arabic LP and SKU for both WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 will be available in the "RTM and Post-English-RTM" timeframes. Exactly when, we're not ready to announce yet, but it's definitely not in the B2TR timeframe. Sorry.

Hi
I have seen the Beta 2 "Office server products Language Packs" mentioned in many places, but I haven't found them anywhere ready to download. Can someone please point me to the place where they actually are? I need the language packs for german (32 and 64 bit)?

Second question: Is it true that for MOSS 2007 *only* the ServerLanguagePacks need to be installed (and the WSS Language Packs do not need to be installed)?

Thank you

# re: 2007 Office system -- server products language offerings

In answer to the question, “Is it true that for MOSS 2007 *only* the ServerLanguagePacks need to be installed (and the WSS Language Packs do not need to be installed)?”

There are two types of language packs offered: Office Server and WSS Stand-Alone. The Office Server Language Pack (a.k.a. “ServerLanguagePacks”) is a super-set of translations that includes WSS and can be applied to any Office Server application—MOSS, Forms Server, Project Server, and Search Server. The WSS stand-along language pack applies to WSS only and will not work with any other application.

We have heard rumours that an upgrade from an English MOSS install to the Dutch language requires a totally new install, because the language changes also apply to the database tables.

Can anybody confirm this? I am not a very technical person, but I find it really strange that for something as simple as a languagepack you need to reinstall, configure and fill your entire MOSS system?

To me as a client this seems as ridiculous as re-installing XP after downloading a Word languagepack.

Hi Gwyneth,

I have a question regarding installing language packs on servers? Currently we have 14 languages installed. The one thing i'm having issue with is that when I create a blog site for other languages (except English, Japanese, and French), it returns an error "Page cannot be displayed." Do you have any idea why this error is appearing and what can I do to solve it?

Thank you very much,
