Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

We appreciate those of you who have participated in our Tech Beta and TAP (Technology Adoption Program).  If you aren't planning to do a fresh/clean install of WSS 3.0 RTM or Office SharePoint Server 2007 and are planning to upgrade from an earlier beta, please read this carefully.  Note that product support will not be available until after you have properly upgraded your environment to the RTM version of the software.  Come back to this blog within the next few days for steps on how to upgrade to RTM from Beta 2 Tech Refresh.  If you are still running Beta 2, please refer to the steps posted here.

Supported Build to Build Upgrade Paths:

  • WSS v3.0 Beta 2 -> WSS Beta 2 Tech Refresh -> WSS RTM
  • WSS v3.0 RTM -> SharePoint Server 2007 RTM
  • SharePoint Server Beta 2 -> SharePoint Server Beta 2 Tech Refresh Standard -> SharePoint Server Standard Edition RTM
  • SharePoint Server Beta 2 -> SharePoint Server Beta 2 Tech Refresh Enterprise -> SharePoint Server Enterprise Edition RTM

FAQs:

Q:   Can I upgrade from Beta 2 to RTM directly?

A:   No, on either WSS 3.0 or SharePoint Server, you must upgrade to B2TR first before you can upgrade to RTM.

Q:   What if I’m running SharePoint Server Beta 2 and want to run just WSS 3.0 RTM?

A:   Go ahead and upgrade to SharePoint Server Standard or Enterprise Trial.  We will publish steps on this in the near future to get from SharePoint Server 2007 RTM (Standard and Enterprise) editions to WSS 3.0 RTM.  Of course, the enhanced SharePoint Server functionality will be lost as a result of this procedure.  Before these steps are published, DO NOT ATTEMPT to “downgrade” from SharePoint Server 2007 to WSS 3.0.

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

Hi

Sorry a focus "French" question.

As there was a french Language pack in beta 2 but not in Beta 2 TR, how can we migrate a US beta 2 site using FR language pack to RTM ?

Is there any issue ?

For update in TR, we need to deploy the TR Language pack, so if you got some idea ...

Thanks in Advance

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

Joel,

We installed the SharePoint server enterprise betas even though we will be standard customers at RTM. (This was due to several difficulties in the B2TR install for standard).

Will it be possible to upgrade from the enterprise beta to the standard rtm? (We've disabled all enterprise features on our servers).

It would be nice to see the upgrade paths from Beta 2 TR to RTM versions.  For example, can we go from Beta 2TR Enterprise to RTM Standard?

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

Language packs aren't something that you migrate per se.  You simply uninstall before you start, then install the RTM language pack after you're done. (as in the instructions)

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

We currently have WSS2.0. It is my job to install WSS3.0 and MOSS on a new server farm and migrate the databases over to it. Is this possible?

What is the best approach. Are there any links/guides for this sort of upgrade?

Many thanks

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

Joel,

Is it possible to perform a Build to Build upgrade using Content Deployment?

As in setting up an RTM farm and then using Content Deployment to publish the content from a Beta 2 environment.

If this can be used, can this be done in the following situations:

B2 to B2TR

B2 to RTM

B2TR to RTM

Thanks in Advance,

I am also strongly intrested in Vincent's question. In fact can I transfer content in any way, not necessary with Content Deployment

# re: Build to Build Upgrade Path to RTM

Vincent,

I found a workaround for migrating content. Saving all list as templates (including content) and creating lists from templates on the destination site worked perfectly for me. This can be done easily with code also. I wrote two applications, each of them less than 100 lines of code. The first application iterates and saves the lists as templates and the second one restores them.

I hope this workaround helps you.
