Pre-announcing the "Fabulous 40" Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

The preview page for the new Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 has been launched, and it provides useful information about the types of SharePoint sites that you can effortlessly create with these templates. The forty templates will be released to the Web as free downloads in early 2007. All of these templates will have been developed with Office SharePoint Designer 2007 and incorporate many of the new features in WSS 3.0, including wikis, enhanced document management, and improved synchronization of calendars and tasks with Outlook 2007. Yes, they will indeed be fabulous! J

If you’re using a SharePoint site that was created with one of the existing “Thrilling 33” Application Templates for WSS 2.0, you need not worry because we will provide migration guidance documentation and tools to help you upgrade the site to work on WSS 3.0. More details will be announced on this blog in the near future.

INCREdIBLE !! Plus these are WSS 3. Oh man - no reason to argue with sharepoint now.

BTW - it'd be nice if there be such designer templates for master pages as well. Are there any plans for that?

After installing the Application Template "Budgeting and Tracking Multiple Projects" and then creating the column "% Complete" for a Gantt View in the "Project Milestones" list, when trying to ADD a new item the column "% Complete" does not appear.  This is a major shortcoming of the list and defeats the ability to track Milestones "% Complete"!  Has anyone else experienced this issue? To Whom It May Concern:

Could someone help me or direct me to the right resource to investigate this issue...

While working in the SharePoint 2007 environment and using the Application Template "Budgeting and Tracking Multiple Projects", I was adding "% Complete" to the "Project Milestones" list in order to add a Gantt View.  When trying to ADD a new Milestone, only the default columns appear and "% Complete" does not appear.  This defeats the purpose of a milestone list to show progress.  I have tried this in 2 environments and have concluded this is either a major BUG in the "Project Milestone" list or the "Budgeting and Tracking Multiple Projects" template.  How do issues like these get resolved or identified to Microsoft?

Thank-you for your help,

# re: Pre-announcing the "Fabulous 40" Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

If you want to add new column to the list follow these steps

1) Go to List Settings

2) Advance Settings

3) Allow management of content types

4) Select Yes

5) Content Type will be added

6) Add the one more content type Item from "Add from existing site content types"

7) Now in the Item Content Type add custom column

4) Now go to Allow management of content types

and select No

Hope this answer the question

# re: Pre-announcing the "Fabulous 40" Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Faraz,

You solved the problem!  I have been working with SharePoint 2003 for over a year.

WHY did Microsoft make this so difficult in SharePoint 2007?  Probably because they want people to go to training to relearn in SharePoint 2007 what they already had learned in SharePoint 2003!!!!!

Thanks again for your help!

Rod

# re: Pre-announcing the "Fabulous 40" Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Faraz,

Sorry but I thought the procedure you provided solved the problem.  IT DID NOT.  I got so excited I added the columns in the Project Milestones list and then looked in the Project Tasks list - DAAAHHHH - which already has a "%Complete" column.

I thought it was working but unfortunately your solution FAILED for the "Project Milestones list".  No matter what I do to ADD A NEW ITEM the "% Complete" column DOES NOT appear for data entry nor any other column I have added.

If your procedure WORKED for you and it DOES NOT work for me then I can ONLY CONCLUDE that the Project Milestones list under the Application Template "Budgeting and Tracking Multiple Projects" is broken.

I DO appreciate your help and am just SOOOOO frustrated with this!

# re: Pre-announcing the "Fabulous 40" Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Faraz,

The 13 step procedure, in the exact order you provided DID WORK.  I sincerely thank-you for your help and patience.  My concern is the ORDER has be followed exactly or it doesn't work, i.e. in the previous blog you provided, the order was different, i.e. we clicked Advance Settings first rather than created the "% Complete" column first as per your second blog.  This procedure IS ONLY required for the Project Milestone's list and other list you can add a column with not issue.  Now isn't that interesting?

Thanks again,

Rod

# Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 ALERTS DON'T WORK

Would be nice if alerts would actually work.  I see lots of other people out there searching for the same problem:  When an alert is created we get the email confirming that, so don't even try to spew "problems with your SMTP BS" but when documents are changed no alerts are sent.  And there is no Timer Job Definition for Immediate Alerts.  And no documentation for how to create one.

# Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 ALERTS DON'T WORK

I have the same situation as Chris above. And yes, the Sharepoint Timer service is working. I get the confirmation when the alert is set up for a particular list, but no alert if the content of that list has changed. If I'm not only one having this problem, then something is fundamentally flawed in the installation process or instructions. I've tried to turn on all kinds of logging and can't find an error message.

# Employee Training and Scheduling Template pemissions issue.

Ok, first off my appologies if this was answered somewhere else but I couldn't find it.  :-(

When a user registers for a course the least amount of damage they can do to a course listing is edit it, which we still do not like, and have the seating availablity still work.

I found that this is a permission related issue.

-I created a new permission level from a copy of the Contribute permission level. I uncheck the “Add Items” and “Delete Items” permission and leaved only the “Edit Items” permission.

-Then on Courses permissions, I created a Group (named Training Users) and gave this group the permission level created.

With this I was able to give users the ability to register to courses and at the same time deny them the ability to add new items and to delete existing items.

Unfortunately this doesn’t answer to all my requirements because users can still edit items, as I indicated above.  Anyone know a fix for this or a way to have the workflow flow on a seperate set of credentials instead of using those of the registrant?

Thank you much for any direction or advice on this matter!!

# re: How do you add columns to the Employee Training and Scheduling Template

I followed the 13 step directions above to add columns to the Employee Training Scheduling and Materials Application template. The columns are added but they do not appear on the forms for the user to register or anywhere else to track the information, You can add them in teh dataview webpart but not on hte links where it says Add a course, Upcoming Courses, etc. Thanks!

Thanks very much for all the effort put into these templates. They not only provide a 'quick start' but are useful for learning both Designer and SharePoint.

It would be great if you could build on this learning process by hosting a discussion specifically around these templates and their design, modification and enhancement.

Thanks again

If you are getting the error

Feature '75a0fea7-040e-4abb-b94b-32f1e7572840' is not installed in this farm

then it is probably because you have not added then deployed the solution in the "ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp" file as well as the solution/site template that you are trying to create.
