GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

In the lead up to the launch of the “Fantastic 40” Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 early next year, we have a little holiday gift for you. Our team in Japan has just finished working on the next version of their popular team productivity application template, GroupBoard Workspace 2007. And for the first time, this useful template is available in English. Click here to get your copy now.

If you can read Japanese, head over to the GroupBoard Workspace 2007 page on Office Online Japan for more details about the features. We are working on translating some of that content to English, but in the meantime, here’s a short description of the template from its download page:

“The GroupBoard Workspace template creates a space for a group or team to connect and share information in a collaborative environment to improve team efficiency and productivity. The template helps track team member whereabouts and status, and includes a built-in timecard list and organization chart. Meetings can be scheduled with attendees, and meeting rooms and other resources can be reserved. It also enables members to share phone messages and circulate memos.”

So, give this new template a try and stay tuned to this blog for more info about the “Fantastic 40” as their release date approaches!

You might also want to mention that the new site must be "deployed" in Central Administration.  Maybe I missed that part in the instructions.

Anyway, I can't seem to get it working.  I get the following error when I try to deploy it to my WSS v3 test site.

A feature with ID 239650e3-ee0b-44a0-a22a-48292402b8d8 has already been installed in this farm.  Use the force attribute to explicitly re-install the feature.

Got the template to work.  Now the questions is can i bring in my Resources from project server and task from project server.  Would i have to create a seperate workspace for each project and filter out the content that way.  The template has great functionality in itself.  It would be fentastic it were to work with project server.......

This wasn't listed in the Fantastic 40.

I found a cool site, where I can play with 20 templates! How cool is that ;-)

We are also working on sharing with the Sharepoint community. It will be more related to the open source community but with such a small resource (time and money) we figured anything is better than nothing.  In the next few days we will unveil it.

p.s. This has become part of the Sharepoint BUZZ

Alpesh, GroupBoard is not one of the "Fab 40" app templates. We're treating it as the "41st" template even though it has been released first. Kudos to our folks in Japan.

Sahil, if you really want to find out what the Japanese webpage says, you could try one of the translation services listed at http://search.live.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-us&q=web+page+translation.

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

I tried installing this application and received 'Feature not installed installed in this farm and can not be added in this scope'.  This occurs twice durring installation.  The features that the error occurs for are:

3D25BD73-7CD4-4425-B8FB-8899977F73DE

7ece0598-d1d7-41b4-8bf4-c4f879505458

I tried searching for these features in the features folder but they do not exist. Any thoughts?

Hey Tom, I just spoke with the Program Manager for GroupBoard and unfortunately it currently does not support that integration. However, he will take note that this is a customer request for future planning.

This is great.  It is really instructive to see how a SharePoint expert approaches the building of an application on SharePoint.  I find I am still struggling to get my mind into a SharePoint mode.

Is there any chance of getting the source - I would like to know how some of these things have been done?

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for the post.  One more question.  When I created the work space it created a organization structure which i can't seem to edit.  Not even sure where it grabbed that from.  It seemed to have grabbed all the names and added them in there.  Is there any way i edit that structure.  I can't seem to edit it and it is not based on the roles that are in the active directory.  It just seems very random.

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

You have to deploy the solution via the Central Adminstration page.

Also, I only got the template to work when i created a Site Collection and made this the root site.  When I tried to use this template on a subsite that wasn't of this type, I got an 'Access Denied' error.

Jon and Tazeus, one thing you can try to do is manually deploy the GroupBoard solution file (gbw.wsp) using stsadm. Make sure you use the -force attribute to re-install.

More info on deploying solutions is here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms413687.aspx

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

We installed GB using gbw.msi on our WSS 3.0 server. All sites (existing and new) without a GB subsite have issue with Calendar Week view. Week view blows up (web part maintenance page error). Day view and Month view work fine. Happens with any calendar regardless of whether default or user created. Once we add GB subsite to site, Week view then works fine.

- Open the Administrative web-page of your sharepoint site.

- Select Operations

- Under Global Configuration, select Solution Management

- Deploy gbw.wsp

Hope this helps, Hans Hinnekint

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

These instructions are half-baked at best.

I installed the GroupBoard Wrokspace 2007, then tried to deploy it using Solution Management. The Solution Management does not contain any solutions. Then I tried to deploy the solution using the command "stsadm -o addsolution -filename gbw.msi" but it does not work either. This is just frustating to deploy one solution!

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

I deployed it fine on my virtual pc running server 03 and moss 2007.  My question is, once I've deployed it, none of the custom lists show up when I go to create a new list.  All the features are nice, but I don't necessarily want to use all of them.  I would like to be able to create the lists that I need on any of my subsites, not just one based on the groupboard site temlate.  Is this even possible?

Oh, and on a side note.  You guys working on this rock!  SharePoint has been working great for me and my company.  Thanks for all the hard work.

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

Well, there really was no fancy trick to it when I installed it.  I moved the exe file over to my server.  I logged onto my server and ran the exe, extracting the msi and other readme files to the desktop.  Then I ran the msi.  It did its thing, asked me if I wanted to restart iis, I said yes, and that was it.  Then I logged on to my sharepoint site, went to create a page, and found the "GroupBoard Workspace" template under the "Collaboration" tab in the template selection section of the new sharepoint site page. Of course that was all done on my virtual pc, with a fairly simple configuration of MOSS 2007.  I'm going to try it on a development box today, also on win 2003 server.  That will have more configurations and is hooked into the company's active directory.  I'll let you know if I have any problems with that.

Okay, I just installed the GroupWork Board on my dev server.  It's a win 2003 server box that is really slow since it is a virtual box.  Again I had no problems.  I just copied the install files over there, ran the files, restarted IIS, and pulled up the page.  I did get an error when I first pulled up the page.  But then I just refreshed, going to the home page of my site, then clicked on the GroupWork Board site link.  And it worked great.  Sorry I can't be of more help to those who are having troubles with the install.

If you are simply deploying using the link on the Application Management page, then you might want to deploy using command prompt. The following link has some examples: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa544500.aspx

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

Here's what worked for me (standalone Wss server)

1) Copy EVERYTHING from the templates download etc. into your

c:\Progr~1\Common\MS Shared\Webserver extns\12\BIN folder

2) Open a command window at this location

3) stsadm –o addsolution –filename ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp

4) STSADM.EXE -o deploysolution -local -name ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp -allowgacdeployment

5) stsadm -o copyappbincontent

6) stsadm -o execadmsvcjobs

7) iisreset

8) now repeat for all the other WSP files. I did these all at once and ran the execadmsvcjobs/iisreset at the end.

9) Go to your WSS Central Admin site (http://site:17785 and then Operations>Solutions management and all WSP should show as deployed.

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

Wesley,

I had the same problem with the default.master error creating the new site.  I realized that what I had done was used my own suffix instead of SAMPLE... I used PM.  I copied the STS folder in 1033 and renamed it PM.  I then copied the STS folder in the SiteTemplates directory and renamed it PM.  I then copied the webtemp.xml file in 1033/xml and renamed it webtemppm.xml.  What I screwed up was in the webtemppm.xml file I left the template name set to SAMPLE in the XML markup.  I received the same error.  I tried the execadmsvcjobs and it didn't help, as the wsp showed no errors.  I went back through everything and noticed that the template name should have been set to PM.  I changed it and then everything worked fine.

I just tried to install the GBW.msi file. At the very end, I received an outcome error:32. I can successfully create the site with the template but Time card and whereabouts webparts contain this statement:

Since everyone in the previous entries was using raw files (except for a user or 2), how do I fix this issue?

I have been trying to deploy this template on 3 different servers and at one time or another I have received most of the errors listed on this page. Finally I thought it was properly installed on one server, but when I tried to create a subsite with it, I got "access denied" error after about 2 minutes of processing. It also will not let me reuse the subsite name (already in use).

Any ideas for access denied error upon sub-site creation

I got it working no problem on two different installations. Normal install via the package. Question I have is also about the organisation chart. I think that the organigram was based on SharePoint groups. However, I'd like to be able to access / filter using the infomration in the chart, or populate certain fields according to the information in the chart. E.g. I'd like to populate a Group field in a calendar based on the Groups defined in the organization chart.

I have encountered the same error as Joan.

By having GB Workspace deployed, The week view in the calendar does not work on a separate web applications which do not have GB workspace underneath it.

By adding a GB site then removing it, the week view works, is it possible that some feature is added when a GB site is implemented? And that feature then stays in place after it is removed?

I was getting this error too:

"A feature with ID 239650e3-ee0b-44a0-a22a-48292402b8d8 has already been installed in this farm."

So I did this:

stsadm -o deploysolution -name gbw.wsp -local -url http://server.domain.com -allowgacdeployment -force

I have 2 root top level sites on my server, and I deployed it to only 1 with the above command; however on both sites, the "GroupBoard Workspace" options shows up when creating a site now, and they both allow creation, except on the one that it wasn't installed on, I get web-part errors?!@#

How can I remove that option from the list of available site templates as I don't want my users creating these on that site?

This is a nice template - we're hoping to use it at work (Texaco) to arrange meeting rooms in Brussels and Rotterdam.

One request the users had - they want to see some other information in the Schedule and Reservations calendar, ie not just the time and meeting title, but also a small icon if lunch is required (an added field). It's not sufficient to see that in the tooltip.

So I wanted to customise the web part, but I don't see how I can do that. Presumably it's a compiled assembly and the source code is not available? Or is there another way?

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

Steve,

From what I can tell, a lot of it was built customized listview web parts, so you technically already have the source code for those parts. However, there is an assembly for things like the Whereabout's web part and the timecard web part.

So, customization depends on what you need. If you open it in SharePoint Designer 2007, you should be able to make most customizations you need.  At the least, you should be able to add the extra fields you want.  Or you could recreate the basic functionality using a Dataview web part, which would give you more control over the rendering.

But, yes, it would be very nice if they released the source for the assemblies.  I'd like to customize the whereabouts web part myself!

BL:  Although your comments were left last July, I thought I'd add this tidbit in case other folks are wondering the same thing:

From the actions menu on the GroupBoard calendar (or any other SharePoint calendar, for that matter), click "Connect to Outlook".  You can then view the calendar directly in your outlook, side by side with your outlook calendar, or in Overlay mode, which is what you're looking for.

Overlay mode is a tabbed view that shows appointments for both calendars.  Depending on which tab is selected, the events for that calendar are highlighted, but all are visible. You can add appointments, set reminders, etc.  Looks just like your outlook calendar!

There are third party add-ons that improve this synchronization, especially with document libraries but this works pretty well for me.  I have my outlook

See, it doesn't really require a million-dollar developer!   ;^)

Apparently the same problem occurred on previous updates to WSS 3.0.

I suppose now I can reinstall GroupBoard Workspace, but I hope Microsoft will fix this bug as it will be bothersome to keep uninstalling and reinstalling it every time an update to WSS 3.0 comes out.

WSS 3.0 SP1 crashed my SharePoint....had to move the content DB to a new server and recreate URLs, install templates, etc on new server.

In the process of installing the GroupBoard Workspace 2007 template, all things appear fine and it appears to have installed correctly.  Once I actually get into and try to view the Workspace, it fails and points me to a maintenance page.

i had the same problem,

before you deploy ant template you should deploy the "ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp" the file "readme.txt" contains all the steps and it is working correctly

download the templates from the previuos link

# re: GroupBoard Workspace 2007 -- the first Application Template for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 now available

I had no problem installing the GroupBoard Workspace following the basic directions.  My question is, if I want to move some of the webparts (in particular, the Whereabouts and related Organization list; and the Phone Call Memo) to another site, how would I go about doing that?  I already have a site that has scheduling, tasks, and other parts put together but I want to add the Whereabouts and Phone Call Memo to that site.

Is there a way to import into Groupboard calendar my outlook calendar appointments? I want to do an automatic update, instead of Connect to Outlook and doing the side by side check.  Thanks.

Hello,

I have been playing around with the groupboard template and found it is very useful to business collaboration.

Is tehre a user guide that shows how to make the most of it. E.G the timecard functionality is great but our manager cant see the employee timesheets so then how can we make bets use of this?

Time card Functionality.

We had recently employed the groupboard application in sharepoint to utilise its advanatages it offers for small workgroups.

Problem we are finding is in the time card application. After the cut off (monthend) period, we would want the manager to see the time cards for everyone yet we can find no way of seeing anyone else timecard. There really is only minimal value in a timecard utility if it cant be reviewed by management - or are we missing/not doing something right?

My experience with Groupboard Workspace:

I *SERIOUSLY* advise people NOT to install this template. If you simply must use it, then keep it seperate to your production farm.  If you try to upgrade to SP1 with it installed you will get issues, then you will never be able to remove it properly. If you uninstall it, you will have issues whenever you try to do a simple thing like add a column to a document library.

# Group Board Post SP1 Hotfix Error - FYI

If you install post SP1 hotfixes and you get an error along the lines of

The specified SPContentDatabase Name=SharePoint_AdminContent_c3f4a552-4b8c-4753-b8b4-01a39042139f Parent=SPDatabaseServiceInstance Name=OfficeServers has been upgraded to a newer version of SharePoint

in the application log.  If you look at the upgrade.log file it has the following line in it.

Upgrade object too new (build version = 12.0.0.6219, schema version = 2.0.0.0). Current server (build version = 12.0.0.4518, schema version = 3.0.1.0).

The resolutios is to uninstall the GroupBoard add on that was made available by microsoft.
