SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

With the upcoming changes to DST in the US, those of you who have SPS 2003 or WSS 2.0 deployed should read this.  "Preparing for daylight saving time changes in 2007" includes a list of Microsoft products and describes the change.   WSS 3.0 has no change and hence SharePoint Server 2007 has no change.

Since SPS 2003 is based on WSS v2 platform then it gets DST from WSS so WSS v2 and SPS 2003 customers would need to install the update, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924881.  The update has other fixes in it, but the DST update is the updated timezone.xml file and is included in the update.

# re: SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

Maybe its just me, but I don't understand that links to sharepoint patch for daylight savings time. Here are my questions.

* Do I patch the operating system and do the the manual change mentioned here (888253)?

* What about sql server 2005. How does this figure into the patch? (This is what I have for my sharepoint database.)

* Why doesn't this article for this patch (924881) even mention the change? Would this patch do anything for this particular problem?

Anybody done this yet? Any suggestions?

We have installed the patch, but I would like to know how we test it?  What function of SharePoint doesn't use the system time?

# re: SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

We have installed the WSS DST patch and it seemed to cause a problem.  We are no longer able to create top level site collections, and it appears like some components of Front Page 2002 extensions may have been installed (including _vti in the root of the SharePoint IIS Virtual Server.  Please test this update in development!!

# WSS v2 and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update problems...

We have updated our SharePoint servers following the Microsoft recommandations and now come up with this IMPORTANT problem: It is now impossible to insert Cross-site groups inside Site groups.

Can someone reproduce the problem?

Or as anyone experimented this problem?

If so please contact me at miguel.caron@snclavalin.com

Thanx,

# Sharepoint and DST: just update timezone.xml to fix?

From what I've read, the hotfix contains other fixes unrelated to the DST issue.  If that's the case, could one just update the timezone.xml file, restart IIS, and the DST issue with Sharepoint would be fixed?  I'd rather not install the entire hotfix until I've cleaned up all the DST issues with our other apps.

I've done some looking to see if I could download just the timezone.xml file that in the hotfix, or  for a way to extract the XML file from the hotfix?  Would anybody out there have any information on this?  Thanks in advance.

# re:Sharepoint and DST: just update timezone.xml to fix?

Answered my own question...I found a freeware tool called Universal Extractor that allowed me to extract timezone.xml from the hotfix archive.

# re: SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

Does anyone know if the WSS DST patch can only be applied to SP2 and above ? ie, if we have a WSS server which has SP1 do we have to upgrade that to SP2 before we apply the WSS DST patch or can we install the WSS DST patch straight onto SP1 ?

Did anyone try just updating the timezone.xml to address DST? I saw from a previous comment that someone was going to try but no one commented on whether that was a viable option.

# re: SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

@Jose:

I plan updating timezone.xml on our system tonight.  I extracted the updated xml file from the hotfix, and ran a diff between this file and one on our system to verify that the time zone changes are correct.

Microsoft describe how to manually edit  timezone.xml in KB888253, and the process seems simple enough. So I don't see why copying the the updated timezone.xml file over and restarting IIS wouldn't work.  Granted, I know very little about Sharepoint; I'm a recent hire at my job, and have never installed or performed admin tasks related to Sharepoint.

Would someone out there who is an experienced Sharepoint admin be able to chime in on the validity of this plan, and if they know of any way to test if Sharepoint deals with DST correctly after the timezone.xml update?

# re: SharePoint Products and Technologies and DST: Daylight Savings Time Update

I just copied the updated timezone.xml file over and restarted IIS, and the Sharepoint server is working as it should.  Of course, I don't know of a way to test to make sure DST is all set.  Any ideas out there?

I don't know if it's all there is to it but, change the system clock into DST and check that the timestamp is correct when you add files or list items.
