2 of the "Splendid 7" Role-Based Templates for MOSS 2007 My Sites now available!

While “the WOW starts now” for Windows Vista and Office, we are making quite a bit of a “WOW” ourselves in SharePoint land. In addition to the just announced availability of 20 of the 40 Application Templates for WSS 3.0, we’re very pleased to announce that 2 of the 7 Roled-Based Templates for MOSS My Sites are also available for public download:

·         Sales Account Manager
The Sales Account Manager template helps managers streamline the process of analysis of sales and opportunity information for their overall decision making. The template assists in customer account tracking against a set of performance metrics, such as quarterly revenue, growth and opportunity. It also provides a graphical view of the geographical distribution of product sales and opportunities. The objective of this Role-Based My Site Template is to help the Sales Manager attain their goals of customer satisfaction and revenue augmentation.

·         Controller/Financial Analyst
The Controller / Financial Analyst template helps Controllers to automate the process of analyzing financial data and information, helping them in their overall decision making process. The template assists in tracking top performing products and opportunities at different geography levels. It also provides a graphical view of product sales and revenue. The objective design of this Role-Based My Site Template is to help the Controller achieve their goals of communicating overall corporate performance, budget and future growth projection to the management, investors and other stakeholders.

I’m sure that many of you have wondered, “Why aren’t there any cool (and free) templates for SharePoint Server?” Well, you can expect 7 Role-Based Templates to be eventually released for MOSS 2007, and we would love to get your feedback on any MOSS specific templates that might be useful to a broad set of end-users. Just leave a comment.

On the download page there is a statement: This will only install the template. Follow the instructions in the Setup document to configure and see the sample data.

In the package I cannot find anything of a setup document. Is a more detailed instruction available?

The set up docs are indeed in the download files. There are two text docs: read me, and then set up doc. It shows how to configure the template to read the sampem database, configure BDC, KPI parts and more.

Cheers

So how is it that these templates are created?  How would a developer / designer create a role based template for their own purposes rather than using one of the seven that Microsoft has generously provided?

I did follow the Setup instructions for the Sales Account Manager, Everything did work fine till 2.6.2 Site Creation:

****************

In Step 4: Creating the new Site: I receive an error: This page is not using a valid page layout.  To correct the problem, edit page settings and select a valid page layout.

Acar,

Make sure that you are creating the site under Collaboration Portal. The setup document mentions that templates must be restored under the site collection of type collobaration portal.

Oddly I'm getting Acar's error message on one development server but not another.

"This page is not using a valid page layout.  To correct the problem, edit page settings and select a valid page layout."

Add me to the list of people getting this error. I've rebuilt the server twice all the way from a hard drive reformat, followed the instructions to the letter and still the error persists.

Does any one have a clue what causes this? The suggestion above regarding creating the site under a Collaboration Portal fixes nothing. It simply doesn't work.

# re: 2 of the "Splendid 7" Role-Based Templates for MOSS 2007 My Sites now available!

I found this was occuring in a site template i had created. The problem was i had a page layout applied to a page.

The page has to be a welcome page to be able to use a page layout properly.

So i went into the Site i used as the site template went to Pages, the default.aspx properties and change page to welcome page.

Then recreated the site template.

and it worked.

I'm running into the same issue with the IT Managers template.

I looked at the page settings on my Collaboration Portal home page and the page layout is set to a welcome page. I tried changing it to a different type of welcome page, but no luck.

Anyone find a fix for this?

# re: 2 of the "Splendid 7" Role-Based Templates for MOSS 2007 My Sites now available!

I've found what I was doing wrong in my instance.

I wasn't creating the collaboration portal site at the root level.

initaally i created the collaboration Portal site at http://servername/sites/collabportal

this gave me the error " This page is not using a valid page layout.  To correct the problem, edit page settings and select a valid page layout. "

I created a new web application and used the host header of "PortalDev"

I then created a new site collection using the collaboration portsl template as the top level site. I then created a site using the IT Manager template.

I followed the document which microsoft provided with the template but no luck.

Can anyone help?

# Simple solution

Among the many solutions I think you should first try to go to Pages then go to the default.aspx properties and change page to welcome page.

Now try it out again.

Please let me know if it does not work.
