Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

As I had alluded to about 3 weeks ago, the 20 remaining Application Templates of the “Fantastic 40” are now available for download! These server admin templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 provide more enhanced functionality than the first 20 templates, including some with built-in workflows, heavily customized lists and libraries, and advanced data views. Moreover, these new templates (full descriptions here) are available not just in English but 10 additional languages: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese (BR), Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Chinese (simplified), and Chinese (traditional). The additional languages will be available within the next few days. You can try out the fully functional demo versions of the English templates here, here, or here.

Community Kit for SharePoint: Continuing the theme of application templates, I’m very pleased to pre-announce the first significant deliverable from the Community Kit for SharePoint (CKS) initiative that I had kicked off about 7 months ago. The CKS is a set of best practices, templates, Web Parts, tools, and source code that enables practically anyone to create a community website based on SharePoint technology for practically any group of people with a common interest. The initial CKS deliverable is the CKS: User Group Edition 1.0, which is a site admin template (.STP file) designed for user group websites. The default settings and content of a SharePoint site that has been created with this template can be used with minimal modification by any Microsoft product oriented user group. Nevertheless, a user group of any product will find this template to be a compelling option with which to create a SharePoint site for its members. The Release Candidate of the CKS:UGE 1.0 is now available for download.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

The new Application templates look great. I didn't have any trouble deploying them however you should have mentioned in the readme that after deploying the solution it requires an iisreset (or at least a cycle of the WSS application pool) before the templates are available for site creation. Also once the core application is deployed and the solutions added the rest of the deployment can be managed from Central Admin operations, which some may prefer (these are web applications after all!)

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

Yea, the readme was assuming everyone is an expert with SharePoint. Unfortunately the majority of us are still figuring it out.

Here is what I did to successfully install all the application templates:

After you successfully follow the readme instructions (made a quick batch file to run all the stsadm commands), you'll have to wait for all the app templates to install in SharePoint. If you want to check the status of this, go to Central Admin / Operations / Solutions Management. It might take roughly 10 minutes depending on the usage of your sharepoint server.

That's it.

I had the same as above (getting a syntax error on the 'addsolution' command line). I was trying to add the solutions in a command file and had copied the text from the Readme. When I re-typed the exact same text myself it worked. I'll bet you copied the command from the Readme.

I too am getting the error;

Is there a workaround for this?

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

WSS 3.0 could be the most significant product out the stable door this year – it has the potential to change the whole end user computing experience and finally deliver on the Cairo vision.

I did an end user demo of WSS today and it’s the first time in years I’ve had someone get excited enough to ask me to leave my laptop behind for them to play with.

In contrast with the excitement I have about the platform the 20 application templates are a huge disappointment.  After spending some time to get them all installed and working through a good 8 to 10 of them there is hardly anything of interest or reusable value to me. In other words they add very little to a base WSS 3.0 install that I would reuse.

The contact tracking template seems nothing more than a sample list – hardly something to waste 15 minutes to install.

Ironically the bug tracking sample is buggy !!!  Click on the resolve icon and you get:

“An error occurred during the processing of /bugs/Lists/Bugs/Resolve.aspx. The resource object with key 'ResolveBugPageTitle' was not found.”

In short I think the application templates fall short of the vision of being used as a starting point for solution builders and end user created solutions.

In my view the time would have been spent better completing the documentation on MSDN / Technet so we can build our own solutions.

This may be a very silly or basic question - but why aren't these site templates, just that Site Templates (STP files)?  It would make this much easier for us mere mortals.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

Anyone tried the Loan and Equipment Reservation template? The date order on the reservation tracking page is in US format i.e. 3/9/07 when countries outside of the US (like us in the UK) would wish it to say 9/3/07. My site's regional settings are set to UK, so it would seem the template has been hard-coded this way.

Anywone know of a way round this - or if I've missed something?

In reply to Neil - re dates.

A simple fix yes, and one that I've already tried. How long did that last for you? It seemed ok for a while, but now all resources are showing as permanently booked out - I assume because there is still a date range problem. I cannot find ANY more mentions of 1033 lcid.

It also lacks the functionality to book more than one resource at a time which would be a great inclusion should there be any fixes (lol!!).

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

You have to install the Application Template Core solution before you can install the template. This can be found at:

http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=5922037

Both the core solution and the bug database template use the same command line arguments:

stsadm –o addsolution –filename ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp

stsadm –o deploysolution –name ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp -allowgacdeployment

stsadm –o addsolution –filename BugDatabase.wsp

stsadm –o deploysolution –name BugDatabase.wsp -allowgacdeployment

Once those two things job timers are created you can force them to run by typing stsadm.exe -o execadmsvcjobs.

The last step needed would be to copy all the contents in the application bin folder. To do so type:

stsadm -o copyappbincontent

The template should now be installed and good to go...

You should not do a copy/paste of the command line instruction.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

I'm finding that when you move a site that was created from the Knowledge Base application template from one MOSS 2007 / WSS 3.0 server to another MOSS 2007 / WSS 3.0 server, that some of the links do not correct themselves to the new URL.  This causes the actions of "Write an Article" and "Upload a Document" to fail, or to try to use the old location to perform these tasks.  The URL's reference a GUID which does not exist at the new location.

What is the supported/recommended method for moving a site that was created with the Knowledge Base template?  I've tried both stsadm -export and backup/restore to the new location using SharePoint Designer.

Thanks in advance

David

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

I'm also experiencing problems deploying some of the templates in the multi-server farm (2xFEW, 2xAPP Servers, SQL cluster). The only four templates that fail to deploy are those which need to check dll's into the GAC on all systems in the farm. This includes ApplicationTemaplatesCore template. The deployment status shows the successful deployment on both FEW servers but failure on the APP servers. The attempt to create a site fails with an error "Feature '75a0fea7-12fe-4cad-a1b2-525fa776c07e' is not installed in this farm, and can not be added to this scope." Where the GUID varies depending which template is used to create the site. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

Have you tried deploying with the Content Deployment tool (SharePoint Server 2007). It is supposed to be able to handle all of the special requirements introduced by a farm deployment. It should deploy automatically to all farm servers, based on the farm definition.

# KnowledgeBase site template problem

Has anyone else noticed that if you create a folder in a KnowledgeBase site - and enter the folder and "Write An Article"... that the created Article is placed at the root of the site instead of your current location (for example inside a particular folder)?

This is extremely annoying for users to have go back to the root and manually move the file to the correct folder using Explorer.

When you upload documents - they go to your current location.  But created articles do not.

Does anyone have a solution?

# re: KnowledgeBase site template problem

I'm also experiencing problems to write an article in a folder with the KnowledgeBase list. It always creates the article at the root level. However, it works great for me also to upload documents.

Anyone knows how to fix this?

Very nice.  These are great for getting business processes up quickly.  I just installed all 40 templates and took screenshots of them in case someone wanted to look at them all in once place.

Error : Feature '75a0fea7-2791-45a2-896f-e538f91032d8' is not installed in this farm, and can not be added to this scope.

My cause of this error, was because I had deleted the wsp templates from a temp location after installing, thinking they were no longer needed.  After retrieving them from the recycle bin I could add site templates ok.

Looks like in the Physical Tracking and Management template they added two "Retired Date" entry boxes instead of the "Purchased Price" box on the adding new asset form.

Finally what helped to us is as following:

1)Download the solution .EXE file to your computer.

2)Run the .EXE file to unpack the template file to a location on your computer.

3)Copy ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp file in to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN location

4)Click on Start

5)Click on Run

6)Type Cmd

7)Type CD C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN

8)Type(Don't paste, that would not work)following command

STSADM.EXE -o addsolution -filename ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp

Enjoy!

How to customize these templates? Like for example in AbsenceVacationSchedule Template in the Calendar if we would like to have Bi-Weekly calendar along with the rest how do we do it?

Another bug in Room and reservations template!!! When the resource is created as new in middle of a day then by default the resource is blocked for the later day and it will not allow to make any bookings on the newly created resource.

# Room and Equipment Reservation Template

Reservations are disappearing from the reservations list once the end date has passed. I can't find any setting that would cause this behavior. I want to keep a historical record of what was borrowed, by whom, and when. Reservations are not deleted from the reservation calendar but a list with fields I can sort on is much more convenient. Anyone else experience this behavior?

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

I am trying to upload the ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp program.  In the command line I get the famous "command line error," and after it displays a list of possible commands.  The command -addsolution does not even exist in that list.  Is there an update somewhere I am missing?  I am running WSS 3.0 and not MOSS.

Thanks.

Wow, how about Microsoft make a package that just installs it for us, not just extract? I just want to use the template. Yes, I can figure things out. Yes, I know what the command line is. Yes, I use many command line utilities to administer my network. No, I did not want to spend 1.5 hours learning something I will prob never use again just so I could check out the templates.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

The reason you are getting the "Feature not installed" is because the ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp needs to be installed first.  Do this and the rest of your templates will work correctly.

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

I also have the same problem with the Room & Equipment Reservation template.

When a new resource is created I cannot schedule it as the time shows booked, regardless of what day or time I am trying to set it for!

If anyone knows of or has a fix for this, please let me know. This feature would be a selling point in our network, but as it is now, it just looks like a typical Microsoft product!

# Errors Exporting / Importing

You'd think after a year you would see more of these...

Is there a fix planned for the bugs that cause:

http://www.sharepointblogs.com/sean/archive/2007/09/13/designer-export-fails-with-quot-guid-should-contain-32-digits-quot-error.aspx

I've been playing with content deployment / importing / exporting - and even running through the fixes as listed above, I get the same errors.   Export works, but can't seem to get the import to work again.

Content deployment (simply moving the sites) fails with the same guid errors.

Is there something I'm missing here?

# re: Completing the "Fantastic 40" – 20 remaining application templates now available, plus more!

Some of these templates are terrible - specifically the HR / Benefits template.  Creating 4 document libraries and putting them in a web part page does not constitute a revelation in SharePoint templates.

Also - the readme is TERRIBLE.  A lot of people aren't going to know what to do with the .sts files and the difference between that and a .wps file.

Please update the documentation a little better.  You also might want to mention for folks who don't know where the stsadm.exe is.  It didn't autmotically get put into the PATH on my install.

Please double check this stuff before you post it.  We give you a lot of credit that you won't release it if it's a half effort.
