20 sample Master Pages for the "Fantastic 40" Application Templates for WSS 3.0

These Master Pages were originally scheduled to be released with the Applications Templates a couple of months ago, but we needed a bit more time to get the "fit and finish" just right. For an overview of the sample Master Pages, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA102223711033.aspx. Or you can download them directly from here.

The Master Pages were built using the new Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) and Master Page editing tools in Office SharePoint Designer 2007, and there are 4 styles (Block, Clarify, Horizon, and Reverse), each with 5 distinctive colors (blue, green, orange, purple, and red).

Here are some live demo instances of the Master Pages:

Master Pages are a feature of ASP.NET 2.0 that work the same way in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 as they do in ASP.NET 2.0. Using Master Pages, you can create a single page template and then use that template as the basis for multiple pages in an application instead of having to build each new page from scratch. For more information about Master Pages, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA101551701033.aspx.

"Block in green" looks pretty bad on Firefox, are these supposed to be cross-browser (I hope)?

clarity in blue on IE 7.06/Vista - the hover block (SharePoint, MOSS & WSS resource links) displays "behind" the quick launch area and content editor web part.  It does display "over" the breadcrumbs.

The clarity in blue Master page does not render the menu on top of the left Nav in IE7.  Its the only one ive noticed so far.  Just like microsoft to not make them cross browser even for their own new browser.

Another Important recommendation for importing and using the new wss 3.0 master pages...

For the people that does not know to mush about MOSS, they need to approve the files once imported using SharePoint Designer, If you just imported them and then go back to the MasterPage Settings on your MOSS Site is going to appear an error that mean you need to approve first those files just imported (the ones relates to the masterpages _catalogs->masterpage). So go back to the SP Designer and browse to... "/_catalogs->masterpage and look for the " .master" pages you've just imported, you'll see them with a blue little icon on the left side of each master page you've imported (each one of the diferent colors),. So you should right clic on each one and choose the first option as "Protect", clic ok or Yes on the message box, and it will open the browser to approve from the master page folder the one you want to approve, and after that, its done!

Cheers

Luis.

# re: 20 sample Master Pages for the "Fantastic 40" Application Templates for WSS 3.0

I used the green "block" master pages, but it only seems to like the default WSS theme?

Also I changed the top-nav to use SPSiteMapProvider and display sub-sites as a drop-down. The menu looked horrible...

I had to modify the stylesheet:

template_layout4.ccs

I added the following lines at the bottom of the file:

.ms-topNavFlyOuts{

background-color:#DDE6D7;

}

.ms-topNavFlyOuts a{

color:#114741;

}

.ms-topNavFlyOutsHover{

background-color:#317023;

}

.ms-topNavFlyOutsHover a{

color:#FFFFFF;

}

.ms-topNavFlyOutsContainer{

border:solid 1px #317023;

}

.ms-WPTitle{

background-color:#DDE6D7;

color:#317023

}

It looks a bit better, but now it seems the master page is not cross-browser compatible? wtf?

Unimpressive.

I'd be more impressed if the unfabulous 40 were debugged before releasing features like these.

The title says 20, but you get only 4 (Oh, you can change the color)... That's like saying that Ford or Chevy has 10,000 different models to choose from, because each is in a different shade of green and has one extra essential car part, like the windshield...

Give me a break, It's 4 new master pages with the choice of 5 color variations

# re: 20 sample Master Pages for the "Fantastic 40" Application Templates for WSS 3.0

Hi, I also have the horizon red template installed and it works, but when I use the admin account and click a link I get the same template but when I use the User account and click a link I get a screwed up simple layout. I'm confused I assume it has something to do with my rights for the masterpages etc...

Can you be of some help?

kind regards

To fix clarity IE 7 topmenu flyout bug

place "z-index: 1000;" in the

'.ms-banner' class in template_layout1.css

Indeed, these are certainly lacking.

Thanks for the fly-out fix Maunx, I've been looking for that one for a little while! I've been playing with the z-index at the .ms-topNavFlyOuts level, but didn't think to go up to .ms-banner.

I have customised the quick lauch to be a flyout. Each of the flyouts needs to be next to the menu item it came from however i have found that data is truncated, i am able to see the fly out menu text only if there is no control in the content place holder.

Any help on this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
