Installing Windows Server 2008 with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
With Beta 3 I know there will be someone out there wanting to know more about WSS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008. Here are some resources. I'll be following up this post in the next few weeks with my thoughts on why it's a good idea to start looking at the value in Windows Server 2008 as an easy to manage server management platform. What I've seen, it truly is a great step forward and will be quite easy to justify upgrading.
TechNet: Install Windows SharePoint Services in Windows Server 2008
It includes both the standalone and server farm deployment options. You'll see the prerequistes are automatically installed for you and IIS is automatically configured with the relevant dependencies. Pretty slick.
Look at the documenation on the Windows Server role... Windows SharePoint Services.
Bob Fox, one of the SharePoint MVPs took my challenge and took the dive and installed it. He's shared his experience in this blog post on Windows 2008. Liam Clearly SharePoint MVP posts a very rich post on installing from the very beginning in a Windows Server 2008 Step by Step. Jose Barreto has a very verbose post which includes the command line installation WSS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008 with servermanagercmd. I've done a few installs both via server manager and the servermanagercmd and OCS commands. I share my thoughts in a post titled WSS 3.0 and Windows 2008 is HOT!!!
