Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan sample

Ever wished you just had a sample project plan that you could then modify for your own use?  I'm sure this comes up on occasion.

Announcing the Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan (Project 2007 format) sample MOSS Deployment.mpp build using Microsoft Project <update> also available Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan (Project 2003 format). </update 10/11/2007>

The more you become familiar with SharePoint Server, the more likely you'll notice that there are a mirad or a plethora of ways to deploy.  This really is intended to be a sample that you modify and use as a starter.  There are over 300 items in the project with the idea of sparking ideas and in an attempt to be inclusive.  I welcome feedback and encourage people to use this and make it their own.  Thanks Ascentium for allowing me to bounce this project plan off your deployment teams.

Joel Oleson

Need an .mpp viewer?  Buy Microsoft Project 2007.  :)  or if you aren't a project manager, but want to see this plan, look at these viewers.  Here's a few I found that all have free trials.  Look at Seavus Project Viewer trial, Steelray Project Viewer trial or Projette's free Project Viewer.

FYI.  I got the feedback on wanting a 2003 project plan.  It's in the works.  Give me a couple of weeks to pump it through the pipeline.

Ouch!  $600K to implement SharePoint Server?  Killing innocent resources by making them work 600 hours per month?  This plan is a nice description of some of the tasks... but not a realistic estimate of time money or resources.

Hi Joel-

# re: Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan sample

Thanks for the link to HD Projette. I installed Version 3.0.0.1 and it works fine with a very very simple and easy user interface.

I however, have confusions regarding its time (days) calculations. In some "Summary" tips it shows Duration = 0 days, even though the task does span about a week.

Have you faced this situation with HD Projette? Or is the problem with my MPP source file itself?

# re: Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan sample

Are there other freeware MPP Viewers you know of? HD Projette Version 3.0.0.1 is alright for the time-being but I'm afraid it might be soon unuseable because its About window shows Shareware License.

6 Months to deploy SharePoint!

At my rates!

Typical Conversation:

Sales: How long to deploy sharepoint?

Nerds: 6 months

Sales: They've only got budget for 3 days.

Nerds: No Chance.

Sales: You've got 2 days to deploy SharePoint document it and deliver a training course.

# re: Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan sample

Does anyone have a way, or know of a product similar to Adobe Reader that allows one to view an MS Project .mpp file without having to buy a Project license?  I'd prefer to share soft copies of these files rather than print them out for every meeting.

Thank you.

# re: Office SharePoint Server Deployment Plan sample

Nice work, folks.

Let me give you some feedback from the trenches, so to speak.

The vast majority of our clients, employers, etc. do not have the appetite for the "all-up" project for MOSS Deployment. No amount of money, free training, programs and other "added-value" services can substitute for the gross overload that comes from doing enterprise platform architecture deployments. there's simply too much change to manage.

What is possible is to promote change in small, iterative, manageable chunks.

Nowhere have I seen something that has been crafted or intorduced that addresses the concept of Tactical Governance, or like-minded strategies - and by this I mean what is the bare-minimum to do technology insertion, and then grow the platform and the program inch by inch, or iteration by iteration.

Think of it like raising children. you don't throw your 5 year old in a car and tell him to go get his own groceries. Same analogy.

Most mid market and enterprise customers love MOSS collab - but the problems that comes from introducing incredibly complex topics like Search. IA, Design paradigms, etc. are generally beyond most adopters initial capabilities. The alignment problems are so significant that the platform gets lost in the politics and management of the insertion.

Moreover, most of the so-called "qualified" Partner resources (e.g. the "partner periphery") are so under-qualified in terms of consulting on strategic alignment and best-practices as to make their proposed services for implementation grossly over-sold. We've engaged several name-plate, top-tier vendors and not one of them can precriptively tell us do this, and this and this; here's why, and here's the key challenges to prepare for. EVERY single vendor has come in with precriptive theory (despite extensive so-called deployment proficiencies) - and their "strategy" is to Boil the Ocean.

We're in the proces of re-defining how MOSS gets implemented by chunking it up into the smallest granualar packages of iterative work that are possible to get the technology inserted, stood up and operationally aligned.

I'd welcome a different approach to how Microsoft is precriptively "advising" on positioning MOSS Deployments. Having done a bit of work in this around the area, my guess is that others would love to see this as well.

Otherwise, MS gets collab insertion, and that doesn't require a platform, per se.

Thanks for putting us on the right path at least.

Cheers~
