SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

One of the most frequent complaints that we've received on this blog and elsewhere is the lack of end user training material for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007. Although there are some companies offering training courses and a book or two focused on the end user, our customers want and deserve to get something directly from us.

The SharePoint End User Training Kit is our offering, and it's available at no cost!

The initial release of the kit includes training content for SharePoint's collaboration capabilities. To be added over the next couple of months are additional modules covering portals and personalization, enterprise content management, search, business processes, and business intelligence. All of the content will have been written by the Office Online User Assistance team.

The kit will be provided with two deployment options. The first, which is available now, is via the SharePoint Learning Kit ("SLK"), which is SCORM 2004 conformant e-learning delivery and tracking application built as a WSS 3.0 solution. With the SLK, IT personnel can control the look and feel of the training kit, matching it to corporate branding standards, and administrators can add or remove content and customize it as necessary. The SLK also provides a reporting function that shows which topics have been completed and by whom.

The SharePoint End User Training Kit will also have a standalone deployment option, which can be installed on a PC and used by an individual. This version of the kit will be available within the next few weeks.

For more information about the kit and instructions on how to obtain it, please go to our end user focused "Get the 'Point" blog.

# re: SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

I have a few questions regarding the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Training.

1st question – Does the Microsoft SharePoint Learning Kit from Codeplex have to be installed first?

2nd question – If not what version is built into the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Training and can it be updated from the files on Codeplex.

3rd question – Will this install on a x64 MOSS server?

Thank you

The text indicates that the initial release of the kit includes training content for SharePoint's collaboration capabilities.  However, I can't find the content anywhere.

Answers to comments:

The SharePoint Learning Kit does not have to be installed to use the Training. Updating

is very easy -- please see the Install Guide for instructions. All requirements are in the Install Guide, which is included in the download and on the site.

If you cannot see the Training on the connections site, check to make sure it says 'Welcome <your MS Connect login name> at the top and not 'Welcome Guest.' You may have to click on the Manage Your Profile link at the botttom of the page - in the footer, to update your profile.

The Training must be deployed on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. In about 4 weeks we will have a 'standalone' version that does not need to be deployed on your server. All the content in the current preview of the training relates to the collaboration features, such as building a team site.

For more help, contact the sptbeta alias at Microsoft.

Please make a SharePoint Server Developer Edition or make WSS run on Vista. It'll really help developers.

Hi All,

I have a very large client that is trying to put together an end-user training plan for their global deployment of MOSS.  Does MS offer any guidance in this area?  I know that when I worked at MCS I helped the MSF/Readiness Team with things similar to this.

Thanks in advance,

# Web Part Error on Learner site

Once I install the sharepoint training and go to the learner site I am getting a web part error.  If I close the web part, it does not display any of the training material, but the page comes up.  Does anyone know what this web part is trying to access?  I am thinking its some type of permissions thing.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

I have the same problem as Dave. One of the web parts is messing up the learner site. Closing the "Office SharePoint" Content Training List allows me to open the page but its unusable. Any ideas?

I also get an error on on the Learner site when the "Office SharePoint Training Content" web part is active.   I get the same error if I try to add a "TrainingListWebPart" to any site/page.

Is there a fix for this?

# re: SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

I have downloaded and am trying to install the training kit and get to the point of creating the database and get the following error:

SharePoint Training Kit Error

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

The database is set to allow remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.  Do you have any other suggestions on what may be causing the problem?

# Help for SBS and SharePoint 3

I have installed SharePoint 3 on SBS, within virtual Machines, within vista. Seems to work, but I am having trouble loading templates. I tried "stsadm -o addsolution", and it didn't show this option on the list of things allowed. Worked for me on SharePoint Server. I tried "stsadm -o addtemplate -filename <filename> -title <title>, also to no avail. I seem to have a lot of "command line errors", and I can't understand why the thing is coughing at this. aTdHvAaNnKcSe

# Learner Site Content

I downloaded and installed the SLK when it was first available. Then the only site content available was Collaboration.  The latest download has Enterprise Content Management, Business Process and Forms, Search, Portals and Personalization and Business Intelligence.  Is there a way to load the new content into the SharePoint Learning Site I have currently setup or do I have to uninstall/re-install?  Can you tell me what the executable UploadTrainingContents.exe does?

Thanks,

Gar

# re: SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

Gar,

I was in the same predicament as you.  What I did what install the learning kit on my local P.C.  I then located all the zip files on my local P.C. and uploaded the files one by one.  I also had to create the new folders by hand.  A couple of things to keep in mind.  Add the documents one by one.  Don't use multiple upload since there is no way to check the documents in.  Going through them one by one and entering the meta data automatically checks them in.  Also, do not alter the order of any of the other documents that you have checked in prior.  Doing so will give errors if anyone goes to retake any training that was already taken.

Hope this helps,

# A question

I have created new folders under the Training Library Document Library.  I setup a folder called "test" that I no longer want.  I deleted this folder from the document library, but I still see this folder listed on the learner site.  Can anyone tell me how to delete this folder?  Is this folder located under the Sharepoint training database or is it part of the Sharepoint database?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Dave

I had this same issue.  When deploying the solution, Operations / Solution Management, choose the specific web application to deploy to.  Deploying it to "All Content Web Applications"  doesn't work.

# re: SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

I just installed the training kit and all appeared to go well except there is no content. I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice with the same result.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this. The install was smooth and I followed the instructions step by step.

Thanks

# re: SharePoint End User Training Kit now available!

Brian and Gar -

I just had the same problem (no content in Lerner Site after mutiple "successful installs").

I am in a NLB environment.  Shutting down all nodes but the node on which I am running the installation allowed the content to show up.

Be sure to turn your other nodes back on before "deploying" the solution or it will not complete.

I just checked, and the content is available on the other nodes, too.

I was also receieving a logon error when trying to create the training database.  I then realized the requirements specify SQL 2005, not 2000.  After trying to load to a SQL 2005 box it went perfectly.

I am getting the same error.  Followed the precise install instructions twice and definitely deployed it to a specific web app.  Still no go.  My SP admin predecssor, now gone, had attempted to install the solution previously and failed and I had to back out everything.  Don't know if that left anything in a strange state.  I can't even seem to figure out which "web part" is causing the problem.  The "Training Library" web part can be separately added to a zone and works ok.  Any one have an answer short of doing it all over again that will get this to work?  Anyone document exactly what is being installed with this solution?  Reading the manifest isn't helping me.

Thanks

Paul from LA.
