Preview into WSS 3.0 SP1 and SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

Anticipation and excitement around Service Pack 1 for WSS 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 has been building, and I'm excited to share some information on the upcoming service packs.  There are truly gifts for everyone in Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 SP1 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1.  From developers getting excited about AJAX support and compatibility to IT Pro's being excited about the new STSADM commands allowing them to repartition their databases not to mention the new performance, manageability, and security enhancements in Windows Server 2008 and IIS 7.  (Which easily promises to be best server OS release ever.)  Even information workers are well served with a number of hotfixes across the SharePoint Products and Technologies addressing issues related to workflows, alerts, and list views.

Windows Server 2008 Support and Compatibility

All of the Windows Server 2008 editions except core will be compatible with WSS 3.0 SP1 and SharePoint Server SP1 at RC1 and beyond.  New slipstream download version of WSS 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server will include SP1

ASP.NET for AJAX Compatibility and Support Including Support for Web Parts Built with AJAX Control Toolkit for ASP.NET and AJAX 1.0 Extensions (KB941955)

You can now use the Microsoft AJAX 1.0 Control toolkit for Microsoft ASP.NET or the AJAX 1.0 Extensions for ASP.NET to create Web Parts for asynchronous post pack.  Beginning with WSS 3.0 SP1 and MOSS 2007 SP1, developers can create custom Web Parts using AJAX.

New STSAdm Commands

·         Mergecontentdbs - For consolidating or repartitioning site collections across content databases (939035)

(Todd Klindt has written up some steps on how to use mergecontentdbs.  I also recommend some background on database partitioning of site collections and why you'd use mergecontentdbs from Joel Oleson's blog.)

·         Renamesite – used for renaming host named site collections (939535)

·         Peoplepicker-searchadcustomfilter, Peoplepicker-serviceaccountdirectorypath, Peoplepicker-setsiteaccountdirectorypath, Peoplepicker-getsiteaccountdirectorypath, Peoplepicker-tzmove - Ability to scope the People Picker for managing permissons to scope to an Active Directory OU (806244)

You'll see much more documentation on these commands at release.

Top Hotfixes Across WSS 3.0 SP1 / SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

Top requested and support related Hotfixes are listed below.  A more verbose list of hotfixes will be included with the knowledge base content released with service pack 1.  Note: To get more information on the hotfixes below appending the hotfix number to the end of the following URL in your browser: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/

Example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938663

Hotfix 938663: Timer jobs delayed one hour because of DST

You are fully right. Excitement around Service Pack 1. So 'upcoming' and 'More later' may be not enough! ;-). Where is right place now for the upcoming questions to SP1 like how to check for SP1 for a   if (!SP1) { EnsureUpdatePanelFixups(); }  or what about the SharePoint-WebPart-template for VS2008RTM. With SP1, upcoming after SP1...

# re: Preview into WSS 3.0 SP1 and SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

Can anyone confirm WSS 3.0 SP1 and SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 will be available 12/11/2007 and that the following issue will be addressed.

A requirement for one of the pages in an WSS 3.0 (turned on for anonymous access) site was to submit feedback and update a list item with the user submitted it.

If anonymous access was not turned on this task works! But unfortunately, workflow seems to run under the context of the currently logged in user.

Apparently this will be fixed SP1?

Monday, December 10, 2007 4:59 PM by Sam

# re: Preview into WSS 3.0 SP1 and SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

If the anonymous access posting list item issue isn't fixed in SP1, we've developed a workaround since when we found the bug and created an MSDN issue, the answer we got was that it would be fixed in SP1 which would be released some time in the future (no ETA at the time) ... as well, it took 1-2 months to get this non-answer (this was back in Feb.)
