Announcing the Release of WSS 3.0 SP1 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

I'm excited to announce the release of SP1 for WSS 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007.  Before you install the service pack there are some very important things to understand.  In this post I'll try to provide you with the resources you need to be successful in updating to the latest service pack.  Please do NOT simply drop to the bottom and find the links and download and install directly on your production environments.  It is essential that you understand the appropriate guidance and test out the patch in a separate test environment.  For this purpose we have put together a special SP1 page on TechNet to guide you through the process.  The more you know the better prepared you'll be for updating your environment.

Overview and What's Included

For information on what's included in the service pack view the Announcing WSS 3.0 and MOSS SP1 article from TechNet.  This information will be important from both a business and technical perspective to support installing SP1.  The KB "Description of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 and of Windows SharePoint Services Language Pack 3.0 Service Pack 1" in addition is a must read.  It includes a link to a list of fixes included in WSS SP1.  For Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 another KB has been posted with a downloadable Office Servers list of fixes.

Note: For SharePoint Server 2007 environments, WSS 3.0 SP1 should be installed before SharePoint Server 2007 SP1.

Critical Planning and Deployment & Installation Information

Next before installing each service pack please read the corresponding planning and deployment guidance which is critical to a smooth update:

How to obtain and to install the service packs

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 and Windows SharePoint Services Language Pack 3.0 SP1 are located at the Microsoft Download Center. To download the service packs and to obtain installation instructions and deployment strategies, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

WSS 3.0 SP1

SP1 existing deployments:

WSS 3.0 with SP1 for new installations:

  • WSS with SP1 Slipstream - Not to confuse you, but to simplify installation we have created a special WSS with SP1 slipstream which essentially it is the full WSS 3.0 with SP1. It is designed to make installs, especially on Windows Server 2008, easier.  Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 32-bit edition, 64-bit edition

Office SharePoint Server 2007

SharePoint Designer 2007

Patches for all Office System products are available on Microsoft Update (recommended), Office Update and the Download Center with a few exceptions. Windows SharePoint Services and the WSS Language Packs are live on Windows Update and Microsoft Update. For those customers with low bandwidth, CDs will be available for order after January 15th for a small shipping and handling fee from a link off the Download Details page.

<Update 12/18/2007>

A few people have been asking about installing MOSS on Windows Server 2008.  As suggested in the post and in much of the documentation, Windows Server 2008 requires MOSS SP1 be installed.  Install will be blocked if you attempt to install the RTM.  Ben Curry one of the SharePoint MVPs has shared his MOSS WS08 install instructions for how to build the slipstream.  Until we get the MOSS SP1 slipstream bits available I recommend you take advantage of the updates option as suggested in the blog.

 Joel

<Update>

Don't miss the new updates to the SDKs.  More detail on building web parts with AJAX.NET.

Recommendations for 64-bit hardware

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 are the last SharePoint Products and Technologies versions able to run on 32-bit hardware and operating systems. Do take this into account in current and future hardware decisions: Buying 64-bit hardware today helps ensure that your environment can accommodate future requirements and helps you to take advantage of the performance and scale of 64-bit technologies.

Does this also mean that future development environments for sharepoint will require 64-bit?

# SP Failure with renamed server and local accounts

Thanks for the great work.

I have established only a small issue:

On server that was renamed and the farm credential user was a local account the installation fails.

In my case the solution was to remove the polcy rights for the farm user on each web in the central admin. After removing it i have readded them. Special was, that they were already listed at the beginng with the correct name (Thanks to the great update.log, this has save a lot of hours).

# Audience Functionality Broken???

Morning,

Perhaps inadvisedly I have installed the SP onto Sharepoint 2007. I now have broken audience funcitonality on all of our webparts.

Any webpart with an audience assigned is not visible to anyone at all. This includes the built-in "All site users" audience. Audiences are still compiling and appear to have all the correct members...

I have spent more than a whole day solidly looking at this issue and am at my wits end.

Anyone seen anything similar or could anyone point me in the right direction as to where to go next???

I had automatic updates on my machine when the update was pushed out which broke my single server single top level site and 3 subsites. I have since downloaded and installed first WSS 3 SP1 and then Sharepoint Server 2007 SP1. However the site is still broken. I ran stsadm -o upgrade -inplace -forceupgrade and it finished with "Upgrade completed with errors." I look at the error's and I have 7 errors. Some of these errors are:

1) I get alot of Object reference not set to instance of an object at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.AssemblyReferenceFixUp.EnsureCurrentSafeConrolEntry(XmlDocument webConfig)

2)Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPIisWebSiteWssSequence failed

3) ReflexiveUpgrade [SPWebApplication Name=SharePoint - 80 Parent=SPWebService] failed.

4)ReflexiveUpgrade [SPWebServiceInstance Parent=SPServer Name=DEVSERVER] failed.

Is there something else that I'm missing?

# re: Announcing the Release of WSS 3.0 SP1 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

The Service Pack "broke" my WSS 3.0 installation as well.  But after googling, I finally found the tip that worked for me.  It was simply to uninstall (in add/remove programs) Microsoft GroupBoard Workspace application template, and then run the WSS 3.0 Configuration Wizard.

I hope the folks on the WSS development team read this so they can list this as a bug, and patch the bug so it doesn't happen in the future.  This problem evidently was happening with the previous Microsoft Update patches to WSS 3.0 also, which is how I found the solution by googling.

# re: Announcing the Release of WSS 3.0 SP1 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

I am excited to announce that this Service Pack is deeply flawed.

I too had a broken WSS 3.0 installation after installing Service Pack 1 - despite following the 'documentation' to the letter. The solution for me was also to uninstall GroupBoard Workspace (thanks to Jim G above) - however it took me two days to find the solution.

MS - wake up and test/documents your updates properly before unleashing them to the unsuspecting (now suspecting) public. I wouldn't mind so much, but you guys dressed this service pack up like it was the best thing since sliced bread.

# re: Announcing the Release of WSS 3.0 SP1 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1

I'm having problems also.  I can get the config wizard to run for WSS sp1 if I do a command line force (as the WSS instructions tell you to do - later on moss instructions tell you you don't have to run config wizard for wss sp1), but after I install moss sp1 the config wizard will only run on 1 server.  I need to be able to get to central admin on other servers as well, and it's telling me unless the config wizard runs that the upgrade is not complete- so my farm isn't actually upgraded as far as I can tell... unless the config wizard does not actually have to be run on each server?

# re: GroupBoard template issues

There are serious problems with the groupboard template.  For one thing, it breaks the Week view in a normal calendar list.  It also prevented a restore operation due to upgrade issues (I didn't know about the -forceupgrade option).

I've uninstalled it on all my servers, and am having to rebuild an installation from scratch, because it still shows up in the error log of a restore.

To those of you with it still installed, better make sure you can do a successful restore from backups!
