External Collaboration Toolkit Release

[Update 03/24/2008: The source code has been released as part of the Community Kit for SharePoint project on CodePlex at http://www.codeplex.com/CKS/SourceControl/DirectoryView.aspx?SourcePath=%24%2fCKS%2fECTS&changeSetId=10429.]

I'm happy to announce that the External Collaboration Toolkit for SharePoint has been released and is now available at http://www.microsoft.com/collabkit.  This toolkit helps you easily deploy a SharePoint-based external collaboration environment for your organization.  Once the toolkit is in place, end users can quickly create a new collaboration sites (using a SharePoint site collection) and add internal and external users to that site.  Both these process can be workflow enabled so that an administrator must approve both site and user creation.

The toolkit works with both MOSS 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.  It also leverages SQL Server 2005 and ADAM.  All external users are created in the ADAM directory so they are segregated from your primary user store.

The main new features this toolkit provides are

  1. Integrated workflow and approval for site collection provisioning
  2. External user provisioning and management interface in ADAM

I'd love to get your feedback on this tool, demonstrated at the keynote of the SharePoint conference. We are making the source code available on CodePlex very shortly and will provide a link here when it's available.

Joel,

I don't know if Bill is monitoring these comments or if you know the answer, but can you comment on what additional licensing costs may result from this?

I can't remember from the keynote and I'm too lazy to watch the recorded version to check, although I think licensing was mentioned.

Thanks,

Tom

# Configuration Utility not working

I need help!  As easy as the setup sounds, I cannot get this to work.  First issue is the Configuration utility.  After I enter the data, I get an unexpected web part error.  Because of that I cannot access the External User Manager web part, even though I have made the groups excatly and added myself to all of them.  Any tips in in-depth about permissions for SQL, or web.config fixes would be appreciated.  I mention those two as they are referenced the most in blogs....although I still cannot get it to work.  Thanks

# re: External Collaboration Toolkit Release

As soon as I enter a group name for External User Managers in the Configuration Utility and then navigate to the Admin page with the External User Manager Webpart I receive the following stack trace

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]

  EAT.Common.cUserManager.DaysUntilPasswordExpires(MembershipUser u) +31

  EAT.Common.cUserManager.PasswordExpired(MembershipUser U) +5

  EAT.UserManager.UserManager.Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) +2001

  System.Web.UI.Control.RenderControlInternal(HtmlTextWriter writer, ControlAdapter adapter) +25

  System.Web.UI.Control.RenderControl(HtmlTextWriter writer, ControlAdapter adapter) +121

  System.Web.UI.Control.RenderControl(HtmlTextWriter writer) +22

  Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.SPChrome.RenderPartContents(HtmlTextWriter output, WebPart part) +52

My domain password policies are set.  I am desperate for a solution.
