Announcing the VSeWSS version 1.2!

Hi everyone, Chris Johnson from the WSS PM team here.  We are really excited and pleased to announce that Version 1.2 of the Visual Studio extensions for WSS is now available for download!

This version adds Visual Studio 2008 support to the extensions.  This is something many of you have been asking for.

Download VSeWSS 1.2 right here.

Today we are releasing the English edition of the Version 1.2 extensions.  We will be releasing the German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, and Korean language versions shortly.

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting VS2008 support, so we hope this release will help you build fantastic SharePoint solutions with the latest Visual Studio toolset.

Note:  Version 1.2 is only for Visual Studio 2008.  If you use Visual Studio 2005, you should still use Version 1.1 (download).

Also, I'm very excited to introduce: http://www.MSSharePointDeveloper.com! If you want to learn about SharePoint development, we designed this website to be the best place for you to get started. It has links to whitepapers, virtual labs, webcasts, screencasts, quickstarts, and other useful resources.  You can also download a virtual machine that has been optimized for SharePoint development and includes all the tools you need to get started. So, go to http://www.MSSharePointDeveloper.com now! It's an easy URL to remember, so pass it along to your friends!

VSeWSS User Guide

Hi,

What are the plans for the next release ;-)? I was hoping for new functionality in this release, so it would be nice to find out what and when we can expect in this area.

# re: Announcing the VSeWSS version 1.2!

Hi

Thanks for this. I just posted a comment on the post for the 1.1 release but I'll report here in case you miss it.

For future version please consider adding a 'rootfile' option in the assme way that you can currently add a 'template' type. I use it to deploy web services to ISAPI/_vti_bin.

Currently I can actually do a hack by including the files as template files, then manually changing the manifest.xml to include the RootFiles tags, then after deploying the package (which then puts files in both 12/ISAPI/_vti_bin and 12/TEMPLATE/ISAPI/_vti_bin) I delete the ISAPI folder that has been created under template. Obviously this is a bit ugly.

Alternatively is there any other way to ensure the files are included in the package? (If I just update the manifest.xml the files are no included)

Cheers

Mark

# You gotta be kidding me - no new features?

4 months to migrate to the new VS version?  4 months for the maker of VS, and the maker of MOSS to migrate, without adding features. 4 months in which to study how it could be done (WSP Builder, STSDev).

It's time MS puts this on CodePlex and get some community involvement to speed up this process.

# re: Announcing the VSeWSS version 1.2!

Is there a GOOD way to upgrade a solution developed using VSeWSS?  The only way I have found to do it is to go to the Solution folder generated after a Deploy is run, then update the SiteElements feature.xml to have the same ID as the SiteElements in my initial deploy.  I then have to create my own DDF and repackage the WSP.  If there is no other way, how about making the SiteElements Feature a standard part of the VSeWSS Directory structure so that it is not recreated everytime we deploy.

# re: Announcing the VSeWSS version 1.2!

I've found that when you create a web part project, the feature name is automatically set to webpart1.  When deploying I get the following message 'webpart1 already on sharepoint'.  I don't want to remove webpart1, I want to be able to rename the feature.  I've tried editing the manifest.xml, feature.xml etc using wspview but I can't seem to change the solution name from webpart1.  And I can't find any blogs/forums that have the answer.

Think I'll stick to smartparts.

Still waiting to hear what the suggestion is for all of us who have VS2008 on vista-64.

Do we need to dump our machines and find an old 32-bit machine to develop WSS 3 solutions on?  That would be pretty disappointing.

# re: Announcing the VSeWSS version 1.2!

No x64 support again!?  Time to hack the installer with Orca.

1. Run VSeWSSv12.exe

2. Copy C:\Program Files (x86)\MSECache\vsewssv12.en-us to a temp folder

3. Open Orca (from the platform SDK) and load VSeWSSv12.msi

3. Cut out InstallExecuteSequence>X64System, InstallUISequence>X64System, InstallExecuteSequence>WSSNotInstalled, and InstallUISequence>WSSNotInstalled.

4. Run edited MSI

5. Use at own risk!  (you will not be able to deploy/debug automatically)

No doubt, VSeWSS is a great improvement to the sharepoint dev experience.  Thanks for the hard work and keep it coming!

In particular I would like to see more guidance around building custom solution packages which could include things like advanced InfoPath form templates (i.e. - requires admin approval).
