There is one drawback to going 64-bit. Native code. Especially 3rd party native code. According to my sources, Sharepoint won't deploy in a 32 bit IIS running in a 64-bit OS. And 3rd party code (packaged in native .dll files) is almost always 32 bit. Back in the WOW16 days, we used to thunk around the problem, but things are so seemless now that I am not even sure it is possible.

Not everything that needs to be done can be done in .net yet. So that niche for native code is still required. Even in the Sharepoint world.

We struggled for a couple of days to find a workaround, or a document that would tell us how to proceed before we finally gave up and installed in good old 32-bit Server 2003. At which point it all worked like a champ.

Keep evangelizing, because the jump to a 64-bit address space is compelling. But for now, it's only possible if you have full control of all the code.

Just a pitty that not all sharepoint based applications install on 64-bit (eg Portfolio server)

However, there is a performance issue with SQL Server 2005 x64 when running with MOSS2007 x64 in that if the physical memory being used on the SQL Server box is half full ie (4GB used by windows and SQL Server on a 8GB installed memory), it pages like crazy (17,000 + pages /sec) resulting in patches of poor performance. This has been raised with MS premier support

I think that the difference between the two platforms can be the development and virtual Machines, almost any production environment I know of is 64 bit, but when you talk about developer machines almost everyone is a 32bit one.

MS didn't have a vm product that suported 64bit guest OS until hyper-V so many test vm are 32 bit ones, and also the vstudio extensions used to develop won't install on 64 bits (there is a hack to accomplish that), so the difference can come from here.

Interesting, I'm working a MOSS 2007 / WSS 3.0 rollout and planning on doing it on Windows Server 2003 x64.... I presume all these 64-bit versions of MOSS and the related components require the x64 version of Windows Server ?

Maybe it just reflects more on the gradual pace of x64 server adoption in the corporate world?

Not all companies have rolled out 64-bit server hardware either!
