Debugging .NET apps on Windows 98

I was sick all of last week and am still recovering from the flu. My blogging slacked off a bit, but now back at work I slowly feel the need to communicate about our bugs and status again.

Today we were faced with an interesting bug. Its little known but the runtime runs on Windows 98/98 SE/98 ME. As a result, we provide remote debugging support to this platform. We dont allow VS to run on this as the shell isnt supported in Windows 98 - this was a decision we made a while ago.

Now keeping this around is a cost on us and we've debated the old keep vs. cut decision around this many times.

How do you feel about this support? Dont care? Is there anyone who runs a larg number of apps on Win98 and debugs it using vs?

Shoot me some mail...

Shaykat

I don't care about win9x, except when there is a crash :) It's very helpful to be able to debug a problem using VS.NET instead of using cordbg, windbg, SOS, and friends.

I would say if you support win9x, then it would be helpful of VS.NET supported debugging it.

Man, it will be nice when the world is off of 9x. Will make things much so easier.

Win98 shouldn't be used in any professional environments these days (Yea, I know it IS, but it shouldn't be) , so why support it? The crowd is calling for blood :)

As long as fixing that bug does not delay or cut anything related to VS2005, then fix it ;)

If it does, well I think you can point the 98 users here to see what was the public consensus..

Until we can tell our customers that Microsoft no longer supports Win9x (~ June 2006), we need to be able to debug our C#/.NET apps on Win98. And yes, we have certainly run into bugs that only appear on Win98.
