Sorry for the late status post - last Friday was quite a rush.

We entered last week with ~50 Beta2 bugs. We've had this number for the past two weeks, so Jay and I decided to start beating the drums to get our counts down. Teams rose to the challenge magnificently and brought a number of bugs to us for approval to checkin. We made a couple of compiler fixes (that a Ladybug customer reported) that we thought were important to get the language straight. We took fixes to a technology that allows us to get customer data from you all - this helps us improve and tune the RTM settings. Overall I feel good about the product bugs we took.

Our team also drove performance fixes for F5 scenarios into the product. They've spent the last 2 weeks or so, looking at the product in every way possible to squeeze out a faster F5 for Beta2. They've done a good job in getting it down.

This week, we will start getting our team focused towards RTM bugs. We are also preparing for a Product Unit Review with the release team. These reviews are great - they ask what your plan for RTM is, how you plan to ship a quality product, how your QA is doing...generally getting you on the right path for shutting down your product. Its funny - the actual review goes well, but the hell involved in preparing for it (planning, getting signoff from managers) is awesome in getting your Product Unit (in my case C#) lined up for the goal of shipping a great product.

This weekend was also filled with me checking out a bunch of pretty large computer stores for FM tuner cards. Disappointingly most of the people working at the bigger chains had no idea what I was talking about. My Media center supposedly supports it, but Dell just confirmed that my nvidia GeForce 6800 doesnt have this feature. Sigh. I need to search for dedicated hardware for this.

I'm also an avid guitar player and I just got a guitarport (http://www.guitarport.com/). I get home, rip open the packaging and the software CD was missing. Gah. I hope to return it tonight.

I'm just wondering how responsive that guitarport is. I looked at their website and I see there is a hardware thingie, but I'm not sure if the software effects boxes will have some small delay in the response.

Why did you purchase the Guitarport if you mind me asking?
If it's just to play your guitar through your computer, you can achieve it without spending quite so much money. I spent $150 for my Digitech RP200 which is a nice and sturdy effects pedal I've had for about 4+ years now. I then splurged for a $2 part from RadioShack to convert the 1/4th cable to 1/8th so that it can be plugged directly into the soundcard. I plugged it into the microphone jack so I could have the extra dB level but it's usually overkill to have it turned on while I play.

I put up a post explaining my setup here: http://geekswithblogs.net/jbrayton/archive/2004/04/19/MyGear.aspx. I haven't changed it one bit and the recording quality is rather nice.

The only thing that may make a difference is that the Guitarport hooks directly to the unit and you may get a better sound while you record since it's not ran through the computer's sound card. My setup really only requires the $2 converter part to be able to record the guitar. I can hear it quite nicely but I like the extra balls my pedal brings to the table so that's the only reason it's even included in the setup.

If I had my way I'd choose a DigiDesign Mbox. Yeah it's $500 but it's damn sweet. It also comes with ProTools LE, which is worth the price of the equipment alone. You won't get the guitarport service, but the big names usually have the higher end DigiDesign stuff so I figured the lower end product couldn't be that bad. If you're into guitarport for the online service, you probably won't be finding that anywhere else. If you're interested for the equipment only then you might fair better using existing equipment or something a little less pricey.

If you need help with the RadioShack method let me know and I'll be glad to give you pointers. I could even email you some samples if you'd like to know how it sounds clean without a pedal or with one to see if you can handle it. It's not quite studio quality but when I'm playing with MP3s I really can't notice any major differences between them (though it is definately noticable). It may not be a bad idea to go to a local music shop and actually hear the guitarport being played to tell if you would really enjoy it. It may not be any different than what that $2 part will give you, which would be a little disturbing considering it's price.

Related to the C# side of your post... :)

Do you plan to address the availability of Beta2 via an ordering process (a la http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/get/order/default.aspx)? This wasn't in place untill well after Beta1 was released and once it was it took a while to actually get the order delivered. It would be nice to see this available from the start of Beta2.

I've had a lot of fun with the guitarport, it's a great device. I have an external soundcard which acts as a pre-amp for mics and also accepts guitar inputs, so I didn't get the guitarport just to have a guitar cable input to my PC. The real power of the guitarport is in the digial modelling. You can get some really kickass sounds from the thing, with lots of customizability. There are even downloadable expansion packs that add extra effects/pedals/etc. to the mix.

I've never used the online service.

...and because I can't help plugging myself ;), here's the latest silly song I've recorded with the guitarport:
