Article in CoDe Maganzine

I had a chance to chat with Markus Egger from the CoDe Magazine on where our platform currently is and where we'd like to see it going. He wrote a great article Unveiling Windows SideShow that descirbes the Windows SideShow platform covering some potential gadgets and a sample from our presentation at PDC.

Quote from the article:

"Similarly, SideShow devices could be used as interactive picture frames in the living room, or recipe viewers in the kitchen. The low cost of SideShow devices makes such scenarios feasible, and limits are only set by hardware vendor’s imaginations."

These use cases made me think of the ill-fated Windows Powered Smart Displays. Hopefully though the SideShow-based devices would be much much cheaper ;)

You should expect two categories of SideShow devices to crop up with Vista.

The first category might include added hardware, such as a display on the lid of a laptop, or a display on the bezel of your monitor - In this case the hardware cost would depend on the manufacturer's choice of hardware components. A color screen would be more expensive than a monochrome text display.

The second category includes existing devices that connect to your PC enhanced with Windows SideShow functionality. In most cases, the actual hardware should not be more expensive but require software updates to work with Windows SideShow and your Windows Vista PC.
