Video: Silverlight Streaming Publishing Plug-in for Expression Encoder

Here is a screen record I did of the workflow for publishing videos from Expression Encoder to the Silverlight Streaming Service. How fast can you get a video onto your blog? It took me 3 minutes and 44 seconds.

Software needed for you to do this demo:

1. Expression Encoder (180 Day Trial Key Available)

2. Silverlight Streaming Publishing Plug-in

3. Silverlight Streaming Account

Silverlight Streaming Plug-in for Expression Encoder

Today we have posted a Preview release of the Silverlight Streaming Plug-in for Microsoft Expression Encoder. Silverlight Streaming is a service offered by the Windows Live team that let's you post Silverlight applications (rich media experiences or RIAs) to the Live service where they are hosted on Microsoft's industrial strength infrastructure.

Silverlight Streaming is in pre-release mode now but the general rules for using the service are as follows:

While the product is in pre-release, storage and delivery is free up to 4 GB, with outbound streaming up to 700 Kbps. As we move out of Beta, developers/designers will have continued use of the service with up to 1 million minutes of free video streaming at 700 Kpbs per site per month. Unlimited streaming will also be available for free with advertising, or with payment of a nominal fee for the service for use without advertising.

What do you need to test drive publishing media experiences to the Silverlight Streaming service:

- Expression Encoder Trial (Now with 180 Day Trial Key)

- Silverlight Streaming Plug-in Preview for Expression Encoder

- Silverlight Streaming Account

If you are a blogger using Windows Live Writer, we also have a plug-in created by James Clarke on the Expression Encoder team that let's you "Insert Silverlight Streaming Apps" into your blog posts.

To check that out, download:

- Windows Live Writer

- Insert Silverlight Streaming App for Windows Live Writer

For a quick demo of how to use all this, the great James Clarke has a quick step by step on his blog.

Below for your enjoyment is one of the free Expression Encoder training videos presented by Ben Waggoner and published to Silverlight Streaming.

Subject: Live Encoding in Expression Encoder.

Silverlight and Expression Encoder at Streaming Media West

I will be at the Streaming Media West trade show in San Jose McEnerny Convention Center from November 5-8.

Ben Waggoner will be doing a three hour pre-conference workshop titled "Publishing Media for Microsoft's Silverlight Platform".

The exhibition starts with a two hour session at the end of Tuesday (5-7 PM) with full exhibition days on Wednesday and Thursday. I will also be doing a session focused on Expression Encoder on Wednesday at 415.

If you are coming to the show, out booth number is 413 and I will be joined by colleagues from the codec and server teams to answer questions you may have related to Silverlight and Windows Media.

Expression Encoder 180 Day Trial Key Now Available

If you are using the trial version of Expression Encoder or you have been thinking about it, now you can use the fully featured Expression Encoder trial for 180 days. The key is posted on the Expression Encoder download page.

 Expression Encoder Training Videos

As you are getting ready to use the trial of trying to figure out what else there is to learn about Expression Encoder, please check out the training videos that Ben Waggoner recorded. Ben gives an overview of all of the features in the application. Best of all because Ben used to be the voice of those FedEx commercials in the 80s, he can cram an hours worth of content into thirty minutes of video.

There are five separate training videos:

- Introduction to Encoder

- Enhancing Media

- Metadata, Markers & Silverlight

- Live Production

- Advanced Expression Encoder.

View the videos here.

[Editor's Note: Ben Waggoner was not really the actor in the 1980s FedEx commercials but if they are interested in updating them, he would be the perfect guy.]
