Microsoft has now released Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Visual Studio 2005. There is also a service pack for the express editions so everyone should go and upgrade their development environment.

Great news.  Except the associated KB listed in the Team Suite download page (KB928957) is "not accessible".

How can i get the beta of the VS2005 SP1 Update for Vista?

I just wanted to congratulate the entire Visual Studio team on this SP release. I've been a vocal critic of MS when I thought it was justified, and this time I want to extend credit where it is due.

MS Visual Studio team representatives contacted me directly on at least a half dozen occasions regarding my concerns with VS2005 stability / performance, and carefully evaluated the feedback I provided them. I was very impressed by how they handled themselves in this regard.

It was easy to use something like  VS80sp1-Express-CSharp-X86-INTL-KB926749.exe

Anyway file-name is already not 8dot3 one.

I saw the same thing. As soon as I uninstalled SP1 beta, I was able to install SP1 RTM.

After installing SP1, Properties window stopped working in the Source view of an ASP.NET page. The Properties window used to display properties for selected item (though slowly), now it is just blank window with empty list of elements. I am thinking about uninstalling SP1

I have Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition (Academic version).  I successfully installed Visualt Studio 2005 SP1 Beta in November.  Trying to install the just released SP1 Beta give the message (already mentioned above)

  I went into control Panel,  Add or Remove Programs and did a "repair" of Visual Studio 2005.  I assume this would remove the SP1 Beta (just in case the Beta and the actual SP1 confilict).

  This didn't help!!   Still got the same message!!

  I hope we don't have to totally uninstall Visual Studio 2005, or does this SP1 not work on Standard (Academic) editions???

During  October  I installed Visualt Studio 2005 SP1 Beta into a legal and registered Academic version of Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.  I presume that the new final SP1 is even better than the Beta SP1.

   I downloaded the just released version of the SP1 on Dec 16.

 It won't install, giving the error  the "The upgrade patch etc."

 Is Microsoft not allowing upgrades of Academic Version??  I hope this is not the case, since SP1 fixes a bunch of bad bugs!!!

  Or do we have to comletely re-install VS 2005??  I couldn't find the Beta SP1 in the "Add or remove program" of the control panel  (on one of the blogs it suggested that it should show up and has to be removed in order for the Dec 16 SP1 to install)

UNINSTALLING VISUAL STUDIO 2005 SP1 BETA

In Control Panel / Uninstall or Change a program there is a link "View Installed Updates". The SP1 beta should be visible and uninstallable there.

If you have installed VS addon stuff after SP1 beta such as XNA GS it might be good idea to uninstall those first just to be sure.

I reported some bugs in VS 2005 through the 'Connect' web site (for URLs see below). Some of the bugs were closed by Microsoft several weeks or even months ago with resolution type 'Resolved'. Today I installed VS 2005 SP1 and I can't see that these bugs were fixed.

Why did I take the effort to report the bugs? Why did I download the 400 MB service pack file and wait for an hour to let it install? And where is the list of fixed bugs?

Soma, congratulations on getting this service pack out of the door. However, I have one big point of criticism: Where are the release notes?

I have been trying to find any detailed information about the exact changes and bugs that were fixed with this service pack. The KB article at  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=928957 is great to resolve installation errors and other problems, but it does not help to find out what has actually changed.

In the KB article there are sentences such as "A fix to the VC++ compiler...", but what fix are you guys referring to? What changes have been made to the compiler? We are using large VC++ solutions for our product and I'm trying to assess the risk of upgrading to SP1 on our development machines.

It would be great to receive additional information, please update this post with it as it!!

Quite!  But it's my understanding that these bugs won't be fixed for the "Whidbey" product, but stand a chance of getting addressed in "Orcas" (or, more likely, an even later release).

This is truly disturbing.  Both your bugs relate to VS and not the .NET Framework, although I note that only one is marked as Closed (Fixed); the other is simply closed.  Note that no comment is offered by MS.  This is a typical situation.  I have reported many, many bugs... only to see them remain open on the Feedback site for a year or two, after which they are simply closed without comment.  Compare this behaviour with when Ladybug was first introduced.  Today Ladybug is moribund.  Sometimes I don't know why I bother to report things.

But as many others have noticed: where are the real patch notes (the list of changes, fixes & additions)? It is a bit weird to install a 450M patch for which the only 2 things you know is "it will improve things" and "it will cause problems with the May 2006 LINQ CTP - uninstall it before applying the SP1 patch"

I agree .. releasing a service pack with release notes doesn't gel well with product delivery. Requesting MS to publish release notes for this also like most of the fixes.

Yes, we've all seen the release notes.  Our complaint is that the release notes don't list the fixes in the service pack, unless that has been added to the release notes since yesterday afternoon.

(I'd check, but the only thing I ever get from support.microsoft.com on this machine is a "Server Error in '/' Application".)

SP1 by defaults turns off property grid tracking in the source view of an ASP.NET page.  This was done to improve typing and scrolling performance.  There is however an option to re-enable the behavior.  In Tools Options dialog, navigate to:

Text Editor > HTML > Miscellaneous

There should be a setting called "Enable Property Grid in Source View" which you can turn on.

In the second link there is a sentence which I quoted in my earlier comment already: "A fix to the VC++ compiler has caused...". Please PLEASE can someone tell us what exactly that (and all the other) fixes ARE? It seems unbelievable to me that any open source (and I am not promoting open source here!) project with three developers on it will come with a nice changelog, readme, and release notes, but for a major upgrade like this Service Pack there is literally no information on the actual changes available? It seems almost like Microsoft is holding back the information on purpose, it's not like you guys don't have bug tracking systems and can't just compile a list of bugs fixed.

Unfortunately the above post is from June 22, so I don't know if that list is still accurate, but for the time being it is better than nothing. Of course not a single Microsoft SP1 page actually links to this blog.

Soma, I hope you take this as positive criticism. Everybody is happy that SP1 finally came out and nobody doubts that it was a lot of work, but now you have to complete the delivery and give us the information and documentation needed to use it in good faith. I cannot assess the risk of using SP1 if I don't know what changed. And yes, for people with defined build and release schedules there is a RISK in upgrading to a service pack with unknown changes. On the other hand we need some of the fixes that we know are in there, so we want to upgrade now rather than later.

Please show us that somebody is actually looking at these comments! Thanks!

I realize this is not a help-desk... but still hoping someone reading this blog shares my problem and may have some input for me... and this is pretty relevant to the subject.

I have a fresh activated Vista Ultimate install (from the MSDN downloaded ISO

image) on which I've installed VS2005 and then want to apply SP1 to it. It

fails repeatedly with a message saying: "Error 1335. The cabinet file

'PCW_CAB_VS_10260' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be

used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM,

or a problem with this package."

This is on a brand new Dell d820 machine with 2gb ram 100gb disk. Running

with UAC off, under an admin account and even "Run as Administrator" for the

setup. All attempts fail with the same error.

Already downloaded the file twice on different computers... so I doubt it's

a corrupt executable.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's a half-gigabyte patch that will take hours to install and take up over a gig of space--to implement some useless recovery features that you should never need and can't disable.  It might trash your runtimes.  No, we won't tell you why you should install it!  Install it and figure it out yourself!

disenchanted so you complain that the SP1 finally been released. Pathetic.

SP1 crashes my whole VS2005 and .NET 2.0 App including Windows Live Messenger. I install SP1 with free space on system drive around 1-2GB, but I have another partition with more available space. But without any validation on available disk space on my PC or option to choose which partition to use, Service Pack 1 just start to install directly. In the middle of installation, it's reported fail due to insufficient disk space. Since then, VS2005 and .NET 2.0 stop working with error: application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I have tried to rerun the setup with the result of more error message: This may indicate a problem with this package.

The error code is 2908. The arguments are: {GUID}. This errors repeated so many times and ends up with another error that rollback the whole installation. Then I try to repair .NET F/W 2.0, but fail with error: Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 -- Error 25007.Error occurred while initializing fusion. Setup could not load fusion with LoadLibraryShim(). Error: The handle is invalid.

Then I try to repair VS2005 without any luck. It's also fail.

Browsing through forum, quite a number of unlucky person report the same thing (https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=226009). They even have tried to reinstall the whole VS2005 without any success too. The only option is to reinstall Windows XP, which is no option for me to just install my office's laptop.

Any help for this issue?

Suggestion for Microsoft: If your service pack take a huge amount of disk space and it's critical to have that space because the installation is not able to rollback gracefully, please validate the free space of harddisk before start the installation.

I have noticed that after i attempt to do this installed Office Beta will not start for me. - So it may be office Beta?.. I don't want to Uninstall it, I been a Beta Bitch for MS for months, i don't want to get slaped after its all done.

Beta SP1 does not show under Add or Remove Programs unless you turn on "Show Updates".

You must first uninstall Beta SP1.

I too am getting the error 2908 and am now left with a non-functional Visual Studio...this is really annoying!

People! I strongly recommend to not install SP1! The thing is - it screws .NET 2.0 framework all together with VS2005! And there are many people experiencing the same problem! search for "Error 25007.Error occurred while initializing fusion. Setup could not" in goodle.. you will see yourself!

tamosius, the patch uses Windows Installer which takes steps for each product to which the patch applies to determine space required. This estimate can be off. In normal circumstances with a less complex and large install Windows Installer would exist with an error message about insufficient space.

According to the README for Service Pack 1 for Visual Studio 2005 Standard, Professional, and Team editions, 4.2 GB is required to install (most space will be freed at the end of the install) for each applicable product installed.
