I'd very much appreciate if you'd share more detailed information on the struggles you've had with TFS (I'm the product unit manager for TFS).

I assure you we did not rush out TFS (in fact we held it for 3 months past the VS 2005 ship date precisely because it wasn't ready). I'm not aware of any significant reliability issues and would definitely want to understand the problems you've had.

SP1, on the other hand, is a different matter. The TFS SP1 was very problematic and I appologize profusely for it. I've written about it extensively on my blog http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry. I won't repeat all of the things that went wrong that lead to a bad experience for many customers installing it but rest assured we are aware of it and have been and continue to work hard to fix the problems of the past and prevent repeating them again. Among other things, we have changed the way we test the servicability of TFS by accelerating that work before the initial release of the product. We will be releasing public patches for TFS 2008 Beta 2 so that we can assure that we have the patching process working well before we ship the product.

Please email me at bharry@microsoft.com with more information about the problems you've had and I can either help you with them or make sure they have been addressed.

Thanks,

Brian

which Win32-API did you miss in any VC++ after 6.0? Do you really mean MSDN knowledge base or rather MSDN library?

Using the Win32-API is actually no matter of a specific VC++ compiler but only of the platform SDK you are using. When you have the Win32 headers and libs you certainly can use any VC++ version.

If you start using modern C++ techniques, especially templates, then you will see that VC6 is not the right tool anymore.
