Voice-activating dialing takes longer

 

An article about car phones in today’s Wall Street Journal [subscription required] describes a study of 54 participants done by scientists at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio, and the University of Iowa. It found that voice-activated dialing actually took longer (average of 37 seconds) than punching buttons (20 seconds). The study will be presented at the annual meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

 

Why would it take longer to dial by voice?

Because computers suck at voice recognition!

Personally, I am using the Microsoft Voice product for the Pocket PC on my Pocket PC Phone and for me, voice dialing is certainly quicker than typing a number (completely forgetting about the fact that it is safer and in NJ and NY legal, where dialing directly is not).
