Extremetech tests Vista Speech Recognition

Extremetech is one of my favorite sites because the people there really get under the hood when reviewing new technologies, and they didn't disappoint me in their new article on Speech Recognition in Vista.  Bottom line: they liked it, doing a fairly thorough job explaning what's possible and what's not.

Most interesting quote, to me, was this one at the end:

You may notice the style of this article is a bit awkward—this is one of the dangers of dictating to your computer. The way that one is expected to write professionally is quite different from the way a person talks. It takes some practice to be mindful of "talking as you would write," because it doesn't sound natural in your head.

Very true, and I think gets at the core of what some of us think about the real potential for speech.  As you'll notice any time you're in a discussion with a loudmouth, it's very hard to talk and think at the same time.  The same part of your CPU that does thinking is controlling the vocal cords; by contrast, your fingers use a different CPU and can let your brain "think" full-speed.
