Voice Search in Seattle Times

Today's Seattle Times profiles several new speech projects including VoiceBox, a startup company near us in Bellevue, WA that makes products using SR as a natural interface.  If you've been watching this market and all the activity by Tellme and Google, you won't learn anything new, though it's nice to see speech mentioned so positively.  And there are lots of quotes from Tellme co-founder new Microsoft employee Angus Davis.

They don't mention desktop speech, which is a shame, since the one we now build into every copy of Vista is so good.  (It would not have had the error about "tennis courts").  I think there's room for combining the best of desktop and mobility.  And by "desktop" I don't mean sitting there at your desk; there are plenty of times when you're walking around the house and speech would make things easier: home automation ("turn on the porch light"), media center ("Play some jazz").
