"Database encryption? Not initially, but it’s on the list and as we have demonstrated – if there is sufficient customer demand, it will be one of the first things we add after v1."

and Niraj Nagrani’s response in http://visualstudiomagazine.com/blogs/weblog.aspx?blog=3577:

"We are looking into the type of workload and requirements for row-level security and column-level security and based on the requirements, we will actually enable those features."

Of course, Niraj didn’t say when the team “will actually enable those features."

However, if SDS v1 doesn't support at least column-level encryption and private key management, in my view it won't pass any security audit and probably won't be usable by most entriprises.

When I read this a big flag is raised somewhere in my brain!

I know you can't say the projected size limit. So I'll ask it in a way that does not force you to break some sort of bond of silence punishable by death.

What do think is currently the average size of a departmental or a web database? You should have not problem answering this as I'm sure you have all kinds of metrics currently on the subject, and no, neither I nor anyone else can take this to mean that this is the cap for SDS.

1. The database is slow please fix ....

How would this question be answered in the Cloud ? Today I know technically how to answer this as I have full access to the environment (OS , Perfmon, Profiler, SQL etc)

ie it could be poor code / lack of indexes or god forbid a resource constraint on the Cloud Server . Obviously I could use Missing Index DMV's / Perf reports in 2008 etc

Ie normally I might want to run Profiler / SQL Diag during slowness to see big hitters in terms of duration, CPU, Reads etc workload for a given period.

How would I do this in Cloud ?

2. Mainting Dev, Staging, Prod

Will we be able to synch Staging from Prod for example. Ie do a db restore from Prod to Staging which is nice to do so you have realistic data.

Obviously can do this at object level from a client outside the Clound but not very performant.
