About Geek In Disguise
it's nearly 12 year since I joined Microsoft. What the hell am I still doing here? Well, two things
- I haven't been found out yet
- I actually quite like it here
I've done all kinds of stuff in those 12 years from helping Orange to launch the world's first Windows Mobile smartphone to some Moonshine Marketing with the Blue Monster and my pal Hugh MacLeod. There has been plenty of other stuff but I'll not bore you.
These days I have two jobs and I'm starting to figure out what I'm good at (and what I'm crap at). My day job is cloud computing guy for Microsoft International. In short that means I spend time with the people in Redmond and our offices around the world figuring out when, where and how to get our cloud computing inititatives going in the right direction.
My other job, often my night job, is being a Microsoft guy on the web...publishing this blog, chatting on Twitter and generally helping to put a human face on the company where I can. I enjoy strategy work; I like focusing on the competition and I try to be creative in my work - I've learn it helps you stand out from the crowd. 90,000 is a big crowd.
I love technology and have found I enjoy helping other people understand it by not talking geek at them. Geek is an okay language but everybody shouldn't have to speak it so I try to translate. I'm also told I'm good at networking but I'm not really...I just know how to get on with people. It's easy...just be nice.
Anyway, I like it here. I hope you to do. If not, feel free to contact me at stevecla@microsoft.com or on Twitter or on my mobile at +44 7802 882 622
