Vista has this to beat for launch videos. Tough act to follow if you ask me (which you didn't I know).
Video: Original Microsoft Windows 95 Commercial
[update: video on YouTube for people who like to go that way]
PingBack from http://www.mstechtoday.com/2006/10/23/original-windows-95-commerical/
I love how the minimize/restore and flying-papers animations were hi-tech enough for the day to make it into the video.
Hi Mike - yep, what seemed "revolutionary" back then seems a little passe now :) Checked out your site btw - very cool. I've been looking for a Flash grabber for a while!
Love how they left off the lyric:
"You make a grown man cry..."
It's a nice walk down memory lane. I think that for the times, they did a good job with this commercial. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for Vista...
Dude, I want Windows 95 now!
At first I saw the screen shots and thought, well yeah, that's windows, so what? And then I remembered that that was the first time anyone had seen the trusty Start menu or multi tasking windows, videos embedded in applications distributed on CDROMS, etc, etc. So great, revolutionary for the time. Then I continued to think. This could effectively be an advertisement for Windows XP. Everything they showed, in action, is exactly what using XP is like. So then I realize, dear god, my desktop hasn't changed in 11 years. Imagine the same thing was true between 1985 and 1996, still sitting around using DOS on a 200Mhz Pentium MMX. I'd be pretty pissed off at a lack of progress. Hell, I AM pissed off at a lack of progress.
If you pause it on the 82nd frame, you see the blue screen of death! - It wouldn't be Windows 95 with out the Blue Screen of Death.
It's amazing how 1995-era laptops are ridiculously tiny and ridiculously clunky at the same time.
Good commercial, though.
That kid at the very end.....I think we just hired her as a web dev.....
what they failed to include in the commercial was the crashes & the blue screens.
You should have posted the video on Youtube or Google Video. Something other than a limited access video sharing site like MS Soapbox.
Just a thought.....
Here's a link to the video on Youtube for those who can not access Soapbox, or just do not want to.

They never get to the part of the song where Mick sings "You make a grown man cry."
even though they didn't include the lyrics:
"you make a grown man cry"
at least they were honest enough to include:
"I've been running hot
You got me ticking gonna blow my top"
<i>even though they didn't include the lyrics:
You got me ticking gonna blow my top"</i>
Would make a much better DELL battery advert
wow...I didn't realise this was going to generate quite so much interest and it shows that we need to up the ante for Vista. There are some links to Vista videos on my blog homepage and I hope they include some of the killer apps like the BBC one and one I have seen for North Face.
I love the lyrics - hadn't really thought of it that way but it did make me LOL with the reference to Dell (or was that Sony).
Adding the link to YouTube in the original post now and will try to upload some Vista vids to there too.
lovely video really. my first real operating system too. i never used 3.1 even tho i had it installed. surprising the look has not changed for sooooo loooooong.
when be End of Micro$oft
hope sooon
thanks for your valuable input. I suspect the end is not nigh though
This video just made me realize how uninventive the start menu really is. "A menu that contains a menu". Wow.
Sorry, it's cool to see the video though :P
...I'd like to see their marketing campaign top the commercials they had for Windows 95 (which, back in the day, were pretty darn impressive):...
