A short question answered with a long buy enjoyable post from Mike Zintel. I loved his weaving history of computing that arrived at Software + Services and the fact that he used the iPhone as the example. I talked with an IDC analyst this morning and did the same thing. The iPod and the iPhone are beautiful (on many counts) incarnations of S+S. As Mike said

The industry’s newest, coolest, ease of use standard setting, cleverest mobile browser ever powered device, the iPhone, has a local application for text messaging, calendar, photo album, camera, YouTube, stocks, maps, weather, clock, calculator, notes, mail, music, the phone itself and of course, the shell. The reason for this is that local applications can have experiences that are highly tuned to the device capabilities and the preferences of the customers using them.

The world around us changes at a phenomenal pace when it comes to computing is more pervasive but there are still too many islands of information. It’s like travelling from continent to continent and have to use a different tickets, flight checkin and baggage handling at every stop and turn. The onus is always on ME to do the work….and I thought these computers were supposed to be intelligent and make my life better?

Those are the problems the Live Mesh team are tackling and they’ve studiously made great progress. When the platform becomes available I expect a LOT more and they know it too….expectations will be sky high come the PDC in October.

In the meantime, did you know that the Live Mesh team are hiring? Come work on the future….
