The Three Levels of Cloud Computing
You’re going to be bored to death by Cloud Computing by the end of this year (if not earlier) and like many other forms of computing there are subtle differences in the terminology around cloud computing. Thorsten von Eicken delineates them quite nice in this SOA World post explaining the differences between:
- Applications in the cloud (aka SaaS)
- Platforms in the cloud (becoming known as PaaS)
- Infrastructure in the cloud (the common view of cloud computing, sometime also called utility computing)
These terms are going to be useful to hold on to and even more useful if people use them consistently. Of course the likelihood of that is as close to Steve Jobs not wearing jeans tomorrow at WWDC.
Note – Microsoft isn’t mentioned anywhere in this post. I kinda like it that way :) At least until October.
