Twitter: Passive IM
I’ve talked with a number of people in Redmond this week about the benefits of Twitter and enjoyed reading Rohit’s 5 Stages Of Twitter Acceptance – I think he captures the typical engagement pretty well. It’s also been interesting to see the coverage of Dell making $1m off Twitter this week as I posted something similar a while back and it became a very popular post – I said they’d made $500k
There is a LOT of chat about Twitter right now in terms of their business model, authority of posts, who may buy them etc etc. I’m a total convert as I was in denial for quite some time but now think it’s just an incredible application and has become my passive instant messaging stream. I thought it would be worth sharing a few tips for newbies
- Follow some friends and some services (by services I mean news sites like BBC, Breaking News)
- Find out who your friends follow – sort of like we all did when Facebook first came out.
- Install a desktop client – many people think Twitter is useless as they have to keep refreshing Twitter.com – that is useless. Get a client like Twhirl and
- Treat it like passive IM – this is your own, finely tuned radio station of information
