Comparing SQL Server Express and Compact Editions Whitepaper

We just published a whitepaper comparing Express and Compact Edition.  The reality is the paper tends to focus less on a direct comparison of the products, but rather an evaluation of what’s needed in a local data store.  Express edition is our Data Service entry point from single user to multi-user scenarios.  With the release of Compact Edition, we are positioning Compact Edition as the default local database and will focus local data feature in Compact Edition, and low end Data Service scenarios around Express.  This point is that one size doesn’t fit all, but two definitely conquer a tremendous amount of territory.

In my 20+ years of developing software and hence dealing with MS technologies, this is the *only* document from Microsoft *ever* that explains the issues in a clear, unambiguous manner.  Most importantly, it gave me the information I needed!  Bravo!

I heard SQL CE is a free software by itself.

Does it require a CAL on a SQL Server Standard/Workgroup edition if it is connected to them?

Hi db-dude,

Yes, SQLce is free.  And yes, connecting to SQL Server Standard, Workgroup or Enterprise does require a CAL, regardless of whether you connect via Sync Services, Merge, RDA, or simply use the SqlConnection.  Sort of what you're asking is does using the free version of SQLce give you a free connection to SQL Server <g>.
