Recommend Hotfixes For System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)

Hyper-V VMMS Certificate Expiration Problem and Resolution

In the coming days/weeks some of you may see some new errors from Hyper-V. The first is an error when you try and use VMConnect or SCVMM to connect to a running virtual machine – the error is “Cannot connect to the virtual machine because the authentication certificate is expired or invalid. Would you like to try connecting again?”. The second is an error when trying to start or resume saved virtual machine – the error is “'VMName' failed to initialize. Could not initialize machine remoting system. Error: ‘Unspecified error’ (0x80004005). Could not find a usable certificate. Error: ‘Unspecified error’ (0x80004005).”

SCVMM Question #1 – “Why do my hosts show Needs Attention?” or “Virtualization Service Version Status Is Not Up-To-Date”

I have been onsite with a customer this week helping evaluate Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM, by the way I am only going to type that out like 3 more times…) for there company. We installed the RTM version and our hosts had the yellow ‘bang’/‘!’/‘exclamation’ next to them and them denoting the ‘Needs Attention’ state. We looked in Properties->Status and it said Virtualization service version status is not up-to-date… Ok so first we made sure the Hyper-V RTM QFE (KB950050) was installed, it was – then we made sure the Hyper-V manageability QFE (KB956589) was installed, it was… Ok so what gives? Well you also need to install the BITS QFE (KB956774). We did that and BINGO happy hosts…

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 RTM’ed Today!

A big pat on the back for our friends in the System Center Virtual Machine Manager team – they have released SCVMM 2008. This release supports Hyper-V, Virtual Server and VMware! SCVMM - System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Beta: Update For Hyper-V RC1
