I'm a big fan of documentaries and Nova on
PBS is one of my favorite series. This past week they had an
absolutely fantastic 2-hour program called "
Einstein's Big Idea" that provides the story behind his theory of general relativity. It literally takes you back and explains the history of each component of that famous equation--the e, m, c and even the squared! It combines a historical narrative by
John Litgow with dramatic reenactments of the people and events from a variety of time periods. (Incidentally John and I were both born in Rochester, New York.) The
individual stories of people like Michael Faraday, Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, and particularly Emilie du Châtelet were fascinating in their own right. I would highly recommend the program for you science history buffs. Check for it locally or
order it from PBS.
