Demo Notes, Take III

Here's a few more hints on the demo that I've come across while purusing the forums. It won't help Abe, who's already given up and moving to X-Plane, but maybe it will help you.

  • Overall performance: AI road traffic and autogen can contribute to poor performance so scale them back. We've made some progress since the demo build.
  • Transparent FS2004 aircraft: I forgot to include envmap.bmp in the demo. You can copy if from the FS2004 \texture folder to the FSX \texture folder if you have FS2004.
  • UI music: There's an icon in upper right corner to mute the music as well as a setting in the General Settings dialog. You can also use your own .WAV files by putting them in the \sound\uimusic folder.
  • 2D cockpits: they're still there. Just press 'A' when in the cockpit, press 'F10" whenever, right-click on the view window, select View from the main menu, select the '2D cockpit' option on the Display Settings | Aircraft tab...
  • MSXML4 install errors: we think is caused by a "broken" installation of an older version of MSXML. We're looking at the issue. In the meantime some people have had success installing MSXML (4.0 or 6.0) directly from microsoft.com.
  • Out-of-memory errors: You can get an out-of-memory error in the UI by going to either the Weather or Flight Planner dialog then going to the Failure dialogs. We're looking into this, though it's poetically ironic it happens when you click on Failures...

There's some more I wrote down at work but forgot to bring the paper home. I'll try to remember what they were later. But right now I have to run--I'm taking Jackie out to dinner. The Better Homes & Gardens issue featuring one of her home designs hit the shelves this month and we need to celebrate!
