This is of particular interest to me as I made the switch from a systems engineer to an SDE about 10 months ago, but my degree is in Accounting. ;-)

re: Dev (or SDE) at Microsoft

Stan -- you're welcome to contact me by email since this is an internal question (comment removed).

re: Dev (or SDE) at Microsoft

What about performance evaluation? Like learning to say no, appreciating the amount of study that is actually required to fully understand a problem is something that tends to come with experience.

> Whiteboards are filled with diagrams of pointers, data
> structures, and lots of "DO NOT ERASE"

I'm not sure that a better design collaboration tool than a whiteboard has ever been created. Except for the whiteboard with attached printer :-) of course. As you say, software development is ultimately a collaborative effort. It's not often mentioned but I really think Microsoft's decision to keep most of your development engineers located together in Redmond is a very real competitive advantage.

Like Tabu I'm also looking forward to your description of the software development engineer in test role.

Andrew.

re: Dev (or SDE) at Microsoft

I would also be very interested to hearing what you have to say about the SDET role, having completed an internship on your team over the summer and coming back as one in June... :)

Andy

P.S.: The cranberry juice cans are no more...
