I wanted to use this as an opportunity to talk about what it is like to be an intern in Office. You can read about the specifics of the intern program on the intern web site: http://www.microsoft.com/college/ip_overview.mspx

CommunityServer internship from the perspective of a former Office SDE intern.

The coolest thing about interning in Office is that you get treated just like a regular full-time employee right off the bat. There are no secrets (you get to know all the new features before the public does), you go to the same meetings the rest of your team does, and you get your own office with your name on the door (or you split one with another employee or intern). In exchange, you get the regular-full-time employee responsibilities too. These are hefty, but that's what makes it exciting to go to work every day-- if you don't get your work done, a meaningful part of Office won't ship. Of course, nobody expects you to do this in isolation. Your mentor meets with you and works through problems with you all the time. He or she also goes with you to all your important meetings to ensure that things go smoothly. The rest of your team expects you to ask them lots of questions, and that's the best way to move forward and learn. In fact I found myself asking (well-received) questions to people all over Office-- it's amazing how many different areas your seemingly self-contained project can touch.

Summer in Redmond is beautiful and Office hosts tons of events for its employees. Add this to the activities run by the intern program and you find yourself with a ton of free food, sunshine, free t-shirts, etc.

I could go on and on, but one last thing that I really liked was that Office hires a lot of interns during the summer, so you get to meet a ton of other interns right on your floor or around the building. This is great for making new friends or organizing lunch or just hanging out on the terraces.

re: Interns -- the intern experience in
