Alas, WinFS, I knew him well Horatio

Being one of the original folks working on WinFS (demoing it at PDC 03, writing the first whitepaper and column on it) and being the "frontman" for WinFS, they looped me in on the news even though I left the database group six months ago to move over to SharePoint.

I actually applaud the decision the SQL Server team has made about mainstreaming WinFS into SQL.  We always talked about doing this since the technology could benefit a broader audience that just the folks who would get it as a download.  In fact, almost every SQL Server customer I spoke with wanted to have the capabilities described in WinFS against all their data.

In addition, some of the tenets we laid out for WinFS are actually being delivered in SharePoint.  While it's not based on the WinFS technology, SharePoint delivers some of the key ideas that was part of WinFS (hierachical content types with rich metadata and business logic, replication - ok - this is really offline sync to Outlook and Groove in SharePoint, etc).

I think this is good news for WinFS and SQL Server.  We just need to make sure we deliver this in Katmai now since it will be a paradigm shift for folks who want to integrate their structured and unstructured data together.

As a SQLJunkie turned SharePoint developer building ECM solutions with WSS as the repository, I have to ask the former Yukon Champion who currently runs PM for SharePoint: Will future versions of SharePoint (post 2007) leverage WinFS of Katmai? How will Content Types fit into the Entity Model? Assuming SP OM will be backwards compatible, hiding the underlying DB schema changes, will document libraries understand eSQL in addition to CAML and FrontPage RPCs?

It's an interesting question.  In SharePoint, we need to support multiple versions of SQL so it curtails some of the things you want to do from an integration standpoint.  We do light-up features with the newer versions.

One example of a light-up feature is with SQL Server Reporting Services.  The Report Center in MOSS allows you to host SSRS reports, secure them using the MOSS UI, parameters, history, etc.

On the specific Katmai question, it's too early to say.  If you think about SharePoint, we probably are one of the best products from MSFT to leverage the platform.  We built on ASP.NET, we use WF, we made a big bet on web services, etc.

Let's get the current version out the door and then we can see what the future holds.  If it makes sense for our customers/partners, we'll take a long hard look at supporting the new features in Katmai.
