Hey,

I got a few questions about the versioning scheme of SilverLight 1.1 in the assemblies. Hopefully you'll be able to answer or to point me to someone :)

In the first Alpha of SilverLight, the assemblies where versionned as 2.1.xxxx, now it's 1.1.xxx. That's ok, but in the assemblies, the version string of the metadata is still 2.0.50727, which is the version number of the .net 2 framework, so it's somewhat confusing for tools dealing with assemblies. Do you plan to change that? Also, it looks like you incremented the CLI header version from 2.0 to 2.5. Do you plan any metadata layout change, or is it only for the sake of being able to distinguish SilverLight assemblies to normal assemblies? That would really help to have something consistent inside the metadata.

zyborg, you might try the "direct link" hyperlink next to the Silverlight runtime entries, rather than the indirect links to the pages themselves; as mentioned, it will take a couple of hours to propagate through the download center but the direct link should work in the meantime.

To add just another thing to my comment, it appears that the CLI header version has not been incremented, so my concern is mainly about the string version, that could be used to determine which version of the runtime this assembly is supposed to work on. It should really be something else that the version number of .net 2.0.

I am one of the folks with a dead site as of last night. Will RC1 sites be supported by the Silverlight runtime when v1.0, v2.0 and v3.0 ship?

Devin,

It's probably because we disable cross-domain file access. So for example, if your Silverlight page is hosted at a file:// location, you can't reference images and media via an http:// moniker, and vice versa. You don't have to host them on the site of origin, just reference them the same way.

John, sorry about that - we did our very best to reach out to as many affected sites as we could, but it was hard to identify everyone. We're done now - you should never be affected by this again. The API is fixed for v1; in the future, we wouldn't break changes without introducing a new version that ran side-by-side.

I think it's challenging to make the case that Solaris is a "popular" OS, at least on the desktop.

With the 1.1 release, we'll support over 96% of machines on the internet (not including Moonlight) - the next 2% are Windows 9x, and then you're into the long tail of operating systems with 0.x% market share, which includes Solaris. With >96% reach, I'd be surprised if this was the biggest blocker to adoption of Silverlight.

First of all, congratulations on getting the RC 1.0 out.

Being totally new to the Silverlight, could someone fill me in on some basics?

I read some of the technical documents from msdn and they all stated that I could use the Visual Studio tools for creating web pages that have Silverlight components. Are there any free tools that I could use instead? And how about the server side, do I have to have IIS server, or could I use e.g. Apache?

Hi Corbin, the "new refresh" SDK includes the documentation and samples; whereas the "old" (preview) SDK was purely the Visual Studio template and a breaking change document.

Mikko, yes - you absolutely can. All you need to build a Silverlight-based site is any text editor that can publish to the web. If you download the SDK, you'll find a "silverlight.js" file that you need to include, which handles the Silverlight runtime activation, but otherwise, this is pretty straightforward. (Of course, if you want WYSIWYG XAML editing support, you'll need something like Expression Blend.)

Maybe I should put together a blog post that talks about this in more detail...
