Hopefully these tips will help get you started. I'll be updating this list based on reader comments or as new issues are discovered. Now I'm trying to install the VS.Net 2005 Release Candidate that we received today, but so far no luck.

Here are the details:

1) I installed the MSXML 6.0 Parser from wcu/msxml without problems (although it was really fast - like 1-2 seconds).

2) I tried installing the .Net Framework that comes with VS.Net 2005 RC (from D:\vs\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetfx.exe. This is version 2.0.50727 instead of the already installed 2.0.50215 that comes with Vista PDC.

Unfortunately, when I run dotnetfx.exe, after a few seconds I get:

---------------------------
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Setup
---------------------------
Error 25007.Error occurred while initializing fusion. Setup could not load fusion with LoadLibraryShim(). Error: The handle is invalid.
---------------------------
Retry Cancel
---------------------------

I try retry a couple of times, but I then have to cancel. The installer then rolls back all files that were installed in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\2.0.50727. I also tried installing the 2.0.50727 framework from D:\msdn\dotNetFramework\dotnetfx.exe but got the same error.

3) Even though you explicitly say that the 2.0.50727 framework should be installed for VS.Net to work, I tried installing VS.Net from D:\vs\autorun.exe (I don't really have a choice, see #2 above):

- I click on "Install Visual Studio 2005".
- I check "Yes, send information about my setup experiences to Microsoft Corporation and click Next.
- I check "I accept the terms of the License Agreement" and click Next.
- I leave "Default" selected and leave the default path of "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8" (I have 10.5 Gb free, VS.Net requires 2.5 GB). I click "Install".

The installer than does its things for a couple of minutes and then fails miserably. Here's the error log:

[09/15/05,23:00:45] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: [2] Error code 1603 for this component means "Fatal error during installation.
"
[09/15/05,23:00:45] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: [2] Setup Failed on component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
[09/15/05,23:00:58] setup.exe: [2] ISetupComponent::Pre/Post/Install() failed in ISetupManager::InstallManagerHelper() with HRESULT -2147023293.
[09/15/05,23:00:58] setup.exe: [2] Component error string not specified in ISetupManager::AddToActionResultCollection()
[09/15/05,23:01:31] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed.
[09/15/05,23:01:31] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forMicrosoft Document Explorer 2005
[09/15/05,23:01:31] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - ENU was not attempted to be installed.
[09/15/05,23:01:31] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status for.NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status for.NET Compact Framework 2.0
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forMicrosoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Runtime
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forMicrosoft Visual J# 2.0 Redistributable Package
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forSQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forMicrosoft Device Emulator version 1.0
[09/15/05,23:01:32] VS70pgui: [2] Unknown component status forMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

I'm now completely stuck - can somebody help? They understand folks' interest and desire to use Windows Vista in a VPC and are working as quickly as possible to get a new version available. If you managed to catch it before the link died, you have my permission to smile smugly at all the others. If you didn't get it, I'm really sorry and we'll post a new version asap.

2) The .NET Framework 2.0 Release Candidate is _not_ compatible with Windows Vista. Windows Vista has an integrated .NET Framework 2.0 Beta 2 build; moving forwards, the .NET Framework will become an intrinsic part of the operating system and will be serviced through Microsoft Update. The Beta 2 release of Windows Vista will contain the RTM build of the .NET Framework 2.0.

3) Yes, we screwed up with the product key. It's a long and painful story; the people involved have been locked in a dark cupboard until they see the error of their ways. Get a new key from here: http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2005/09/21/472506.aspx

Hope this helps, Tim
