Writing a game using Managed DirectX.. The Contest..

With the upcoming release of my new book, I thought it would be pretty cool if there was a contest held for writing the 'best game' using Managed DX.  Details are sketchy right now (like will people outside of the US be allowed to enter), but it's something that will be happening..

While rules and regulations are still being decided, here are some things you can start thinking about if you're interested..  The devleopment process will probably be two-three months..  Entries will be scored on numerous different 'categories' such as:

  • Originality
  • Gameplay
  • Fun-Factor
  • Use of Shaders (HLSL)
  • Use of 'DX9 Features' (i.e., PRT, HDR, etc)
  • Artisitic appeal

Naturally, the categories will be weighted.. Oh, and good prizes, etc..  I'll keep you posted on details as they become available..

Well, good idea BUT:

I want to write in VB .NET, so with DX 9.0c, I can't use DX Managed.

You see what I mean ?

Why can't you use VB.NET with DX9.0c?

I can write DX 9.0c applications with VB, but what I mean is that all examples in SDK are in C#, with unsafe code not like previous SDK.

We will be bringing back VB.NET samples in future DX SDK releases.. With the new 'quicker' SDK releases, it affords us this opportunity.

Yeah, cool idea but it would require a "Yes" to the question if people outside of the US will be allowed to enter :)

Yas, a contest would be cool, but you wont giving away any cars or anything to the winner, right?!?!...so I think it should possible for rest of the world to enter, I would personally enter just for fun and to be credited any glory that goes with it...and sweden has has quite many game-programmers that I know of...

Sounds interesting. I'm not a us resident though, so...

Would the contest allow the use of library's / engine's like the wonderful open source Axiom (a c# port of Ogre) or would it only be for pure dx stuff?
